Hens Win at No. 3 Doubles But Fall to
Maryland 7-0

COLLEGE
PARK, MD -- The University of Delaware's
No. 3 doubles team of Philip Wayne (right)
and Sammy Carl defeated Dave Reichsfeld
and Mike Coleman 8-5 for the Blue Hens'
only victory in a 7-0 non-league men's
tennis setback Sunday afternoon.
Maryland
won the doubles point by capturing two of
the three matches before sweeping the six
singles matches for the victory. Delaware
fell to 4-2 with the loss for the season,
including a 2-2 mark during the spring
season. Carl and Wayne improved to 5-1 on
the season with the victory.
Delaware
will next be in action March 20 when the
Hens travel to Lafayette for an 11 a.m.
non-league match in Easton, PA.
Maryland
swept the six singles matches as Ian Bliss
downed Delaware's John Tully 6-3, 6-1 at
No. 1, Troy Demers defeated Adam Liebman
6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, Scott Fink was a 6-2,
6-3 winner over Josh Ditman, Reichsfeld
defeated Robert Wirth 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5,
and Josh Brauser was a 6-1, 6-1 winner
over Jason Hanschman at No. 6. The closest
singles match came at the No. 4 spot where
Delaware's Jesse Carl fell to Ben Graham
7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
Tully, who
fell to 11-5 on the season in singles,
played in his 92nd career match for the
Blue Hens, equally the school record set
by Sanjay Khindri last season. Tully is
53-39 in his career in singles and ranks
No. 2 all-time in victories, just four shy
of the school record 57 by Jon Zolin in
1971-75.
The
Terrapins picked up doubles victories at
the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Bliss and
Demers teamed for an 8-2 win over Tully
and Wirth at the No. 1 spot and Fink and
Graham defeated Jesse Carl and Hanschman
9-7 at the No. 2 spot.
