NEWPORT
NEWS, VA -- University of Delaware junior
Philip Wayne (right) captured the men's
Flight D-1 singles championship and the UD
team of Susan Pollack and Sari Shuster
advanced to the women's Flight A-1 doubles
finals to highlight action by the Blue
Hens at the Hampton Roads Collegiate
Tennis Invitational hosted by Old Dominion
University this past weekend.
The
Delaware men advanced to the semifinals in
four events with Wayne leading the way
with the tournament title. Wayne defeated
American's Daniel Frid 7-5, 6-3 in the
first round, David Weiner of Christopher
Newport 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals,
John Hayashi of Navy 6-1, 6-1 in the
semifinals, and James Madison's Dan
Davidson 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.
Also
advancing to the semifinals were senior
John Tully in the Flight A singles, the
Flight C doubles team of Sammy Carl and
Wayne, and the Flight D doubles team of
Adam Freedenberg and Adam Liebman. Tully
improved to 8-2 this season and to 50-36
for his career to move into a tie for
fourth on the all-time UD career singles
wins list, just seven shy of the school
record of 57 wins by Jon Zolin in
1971-75.
The
Delaware women advanced three to the
semifinals led by Pollack and Shuster, who
downed doubles teams from Lafayette and
Georgetown before falling to William &
Mary's Candice Fuchs and Megan
Moulton-Levy in the Flight A-1 doubles
final.
Also for
the Hens, Liz Perlow advanced to the
Flight B-1 singles semifinals with wins
over James Madison's Ashley Reyher and
Richmond's Jelena Zivanovic before falling
to Old Dominion's Fernada Luiz 6-1, 6-2 in
the semifinals. The loss to Luiz was
Perlow's first of the season after
starting out 13-0.
Delaware's
Julie Schiller also advanced to the Flight
D singles semifinals with wins over
Adriana Segura of Hofstra, Ayana Hipolite
of Howard, and Eileen Boyle of Georgetown
before falling to Liz Dibbs of
Connecticut.
Pollack
also lost her first singles match of the
season after going 11-0 when she fell to
William & Mary's Lena Sherbakov in the
first round of the Flight A singles
competition.
The Blue
Hens will close out the fall schedule next
week with both the Delaware men and women
taking part at the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association Regionals.
