Blue Hens Down UMBC 6-1 in Men's Tennis

ATE: March 7, 2005

BALTIMORE -- John Tully (right), Jesse Carl, Robert Wirth, and Jason Hanschman each won matches in both singles and doubles play to lead the University of Delaware men's tennis team to a 6-1 non-league victory over host UMBC Monday afternoon.

Delaware, playing for the first time since Feb. 26, improved to 4-1 on the season while UMBC, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2003 and was the America East runner-up in 2004, fell to 2-5 on the season.

Tully posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mike Keller at the No. 1 singles and then teamed with Robert Wirth for an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles over Keller and James Tyler. Tully improved to 11-4 in singles play for the season and moved his career win total to 53, just four victories shy of the UD record of 57 by Jon Zolin in 1971-75.

Carl posted a 6-4, 6-0 win over Irvan Shamasdin at the No. 3 singles spot and Hanschman was a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 winner over Lief Hollowell at the No. 4 spot. The duo then teamed for an 8-6 win over David Jackson and Shamasdin at No. 2 doubles, improving to 7-1 on the year.

Also posting victories for the Blue Hens were Wirth at No. 4 singles, Jonathan Schwartz at No. 6 singles, and the No. 3 doubles team of Philip Wayne and Sammy Carl.

The Blue Hens will return to action March 13 at Maryland.
