NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s tennis teams each defeated Drexel, 4-0, Friday in the first round of the 2006 Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Huntington Park.
The seventh-seeded Delaware men improved to 8-6 on the season by winning their second straight match and fourth in the last five, while the 10th-seeded Dragons fell to 10-8 and had their four-match winning streak snapped. The Blue Hens, who have now won 45 of their last 46 matches against Drexel, will face second-seeded Old Dominion in the quarterfinals Friday at 11:30 a.m. The Monarchs feature the 30th-ranked singles player in the country in Harel Srugo, who is also ranked 50th on the doubles list with teammate Aleksandr Seleznev.
Jason Hanschmann and Philip Wayne posted an 8-5 win over Pasquale Cardone and Ayushya Wadhwan at No. 2 doubles for the Blue Hens, while Jon Schwartz and Josh Levine clinched the doubles point for Delaware with an 8-4 victory over Mike Keefe and Ben Trabin at No. 3. Wayne is now 42-22 in his doubles career, putting him in a tie for third place on the school’s career doubles wins list. Jesse Carl and Nolan Greenberg were leading Carlo Pangilinan and Joe Koebele, 6-0, at No. 1 before their match was halted when Delaware wrapped up the doubles point.
Adam Liebman defeated Cardone 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for Delaware as he improved to 44-51 in his career, moving him into a tie for 11th place on the Blue Hen career singles wins chart. Josh Ditman (above) downed Wadhwan 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 to improve to 50-34 in his career and move into a tie for fifth place on the singles list. The other singles winner for Delaware was Jon Schwartz, who improved to 12-5 on the year after a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Keefe at No. 5.
Nolan Greenberg was leading Koebele 7-5, 1-2 at No. 2 singles when their match was halted, while Levine was ahead of Gaurav Parikh 6-0, 4-3 at No. 5 and Carl was trailing Pangilinan 2-6, 3-2 at No. 1.
The Delaware women won their fifth straight match to improve to 9-6 on the season, while Drexel had its four-match winning streak snapped while dropping to 11-8 on the season. The Blue Hens, who have now won 13 straight matches against the Dragons, will take on second-seeded William & Mary Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the quarterfinals. The Tribe, which is ranked No. 22 in the nation, featues Megan Moulton-Levy, the 18th-ranked singles player in the nation, and Katarina Zoricic, who is currently ranked 78th. The duo is ranked 21st on the doubles list.
Susan Pollack and Amanda Campbell defeated Emily Lewis and Mellissa Lewis, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles for the Blue Hens as they improved to 21-5 to set the school record for wins in a season by a doubles team, surpassing the previous mark of 20-1 set by Kristin Wasniewski and Rachel Dencker during the 1997-98 season. Alexa Dragonette and Brittany Barsky posted an 8-5 victory over Hana Stecova and Kristy Pron at No. 2 as they improved to 8-7 on the season, while Sari Shuster and Julie Schiller were leading Jaimee Wylie and Jen Rimmey, 7-3, at No. 3 when their match was halted.
Amanda Campbell posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Stecova at No. 2 singles for the Blue Hens as she improved to 14-8 on the season, while Alexa Dragonette shut out Pron 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 to up her record to 8-7 on the year. Barsky defeated Jillian Toussaint 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 as she won her seventh straight match and improved to 17-3 this season.
Pollack was leading Emily Lewis 6-1, 4-1 at No. 1 singles when play was halted, while Liz Perlow was ahead of Mellissa Lewis 6-2, 0-0 at No. 3 and Sari Shuster was leading Wylie 6-3, 4-1 at No. 4.
Both Blue Hen teams have now advanced to the CAA Tournament Quarterfinals in each of the last five seasons, but neither team has advanced past that round.
