SWARTHMORE, PA -- The University of Delaware men’s tennis team won four of the five singles flights and one doubles flight as the Blue Hens successfully opened their 2005 fall season this weekend at the Swarthmore Invitational.

Senior Adam Liebman (Westport, CT/Staples) went 3-0 to win the Flight B singles title, defeating Sam Sidhu of Swarthmore 3-1, def., Eric Ferriere of The College of New Jersey 6-3, 7-5, and teammate Jason Hanschmann (Palatine, IL/Palatine) 6-4, 6-0 in the finals. Hanschmann had defeated Adam Wallwork of Swarthmore 6-3, 6-0 and Justin Cook of TCNJ 6-4, 5-7 (10-7) to reach the finals.

Freshman Nolan Greenberg (Glendale, WI/Nicolet) also went 3-0 to capture the Flight C singles title, as he defeated Kevin Shaungnessy of Swarthmore 6-0, 6-1, Corey Ball of TCNJ 6-2, 6-0, and J.J. England 6-1, 6-3 in the finals.

Freshman Josh Levine (Wappingers Falls, NY) won all three of his matches to take the Flight D singles title, as he topped Tristin Bice of Swarthmore 6-0, 6-3, Anders Taylor of Swarthmore 6-0, 6-1, and Matt Hiznay of TCNJ 6-3, 6-4 in the finals. Senior Philip Wayne (Huntington, NY/Huntington) went 1-1 in his two matches in the flight, defeating Dan Wulc of Swarthmore 6-3, 6-3 and falling to Hiznay 6-0, 6-1.

Sophomore Zach Chafitz (Owings Mills, MD/Pikesville) was the fourth Blue Hen to win his flight as he went 3-0 to capture the Flight E singles title. Chafitz defeated Mark Greenburt of Swarthmore 6-2, 6-0, Keith Torrey of Swarthmore 6-1, 6-0, and Will Daly of TCNJ 6-1, 6-3 in the finals.

In Flight A singles action senior Jesse Carl (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) went 1-1, falling to Zach Rodd of Swarthmore 6-2, 1-6 (10-5) and defeating Roger Mostellar of TCNJ 6-2, 4-6 (10-7). Senior Josh Ditman (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) also split his two matches, topping Brian Park of Swarthmore 7-5, 7-6 (3) before falling to Michael Klimchak of TCNJ 6-3, 6-3.

Greenberg and Wayne won the Flight B doubles title by winning all three of their matches. The duo defeated Swarthmore’s Hiznay and Vance 8-3, Swarthmore’s Greenburg and England 8-3, and TCNJ’s Cook and Daly 8-2 in the finals to take the flight. Liebman and Chafitz split their two matches in the flight, defeating Swarthmore’s Murata and Wulc 8-2 before falling to Cook and Daly 8-5.

Ditman and Levine went 1-1 in Flight A doubles action, falling to Rodd and Park of Swarthmore 9-7 before topping Torrey and Bedi of Swarthmore 8-1. Carl and Hanschmann also split their two matches in the flight, falling to Klimchak and Mostellar of TCNJ 8-4 before defeating Sidhu and Shaungnessy of Swarthmore 8-1.

The Blue Hens return to action on Sunday, September 25 with a 1 p.m. match at Villanova.
