NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women’s tennis team posted a 7-0 sweep over Bucknell while the Blue Hen men edged the Bison, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at the Delaware Field House Tennis Courts as both teams closed out their 2006-07 regular seasons.
The Delaware women improved to 11-11 on the year as they won four of their final five matches of the season, while Bucknell fell to 6-15 on the season. Elena Berry defeated Caitlin Baffa 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for the Blue Hens as she improved to 5-3 at the top singles spot, while Amanda Campbell breezed pass Kirstyn Sotak 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2.
Senior Liz Perlow ended her career with an easy 6-1, 6-1 victory over Renee Weissend at No. 3. Perlow ends her career on a six-match winning streak and a 55-43 career record. Her 55 wins are the fifth most in school history. Alexa Dragonette posted her team-leading 20th victory on the season by downing JoAnna Grossman 8-1 at No. 4, while at No. 5. Laura Honig topped Camille Simonetti 8-4. Kristen Mueller rounded out the singles sweep by defeating Tiffany Card 8-5 at No. 6.
Berry and Campbell teamed up to top Baffa and Simonetti 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Dragonette and Barsky won their third straight match and moved into ninth all-time in doubles wins as a team by defeating Sotak and Weissend 8-3 at No. 2. Perlow and Julie Schiller posted an 8-1 win over Card and Grossman at No. 3.
The Delaware men improved to 9-11 on the season, while Bucknell fell to 10-14 on the year. Nolan Greenberg edged Ira Reibeisen 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, while Sam Barrer posted his team-leading 15th singles win by topping Jonathan Brenner 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. Jon Schwartz picked up the other Delaware singles victory by edging Ben Young 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 at No. 6. Schwartz ends the year with a 14-10 singles mark.
Bucknell picked up singles victories from Ryan Sandburg, Zach Hascoe, and Daniel Bednarek. Sandburg defeated Austin Longacre 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2, Hascoe topped Matt Liebman 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 at No. 3, and Bednarek beat freshman Camilo Perez 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
Longacre (at right) and Andrew Blumberg recorded an 8-3 win over Brenner and Sandburg at No. 1 doubles for the Blue Hens, while Perez and Barrer improved to 9-3 after an 8-2 victory over Bednarek and Hascoe at No. 3. Reibeisen and Young picked up the lone Bison doubles victory by defeating Greenberg and Jason Hanschmann 8-6 at No. 2.
