NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women’s tennis team fell 4-3 to UMBC while the Blue Hen men lost to the Retrievers, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon at the Delaware Field House Tennis Courts.
The Delaware women had a three-match winning streak snapped to fall to 7-10 on the year, while the Retriever women improved to 10-4 after winning their fifth straight match. Picking up singles wins for the Hens were Amanda Campbell, Liz Perlow, and Laura Honig.
Campbell downed Joy Adewumi 6-4, 7-6 (6) at No. 2, while senior Liz Perlow moved into fifth place all-time in career singles victories (53-43) by defeating Pascaline Cette 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) at No. 3. Laura Honig topped Barbara Couto 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4) in a thrilling match at No. 6.
Alice Chen defeated Elena Berry 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 at No. 1 singles for UMBC, while Cornelia Carapcea topped Alexa Dragonette 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-3 at No. 4. Adriana Fonseca defeated Brittany Barsky 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6.
Chen and Paola Radolfi defeated Campbell and Berry, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles for the Retrievers, while Elizabeth Anderson and Fonseca ended Dragonette and Barsky’s five-match win streak as a team with an 8-3 win at No. 2. Perlow and Julie Schiller picked up the lone Blue Hens win in doubles as the duo defeated Carapcea and Adewumi, 8-7 (6), at No. 3 to pick up their fourth straight win as a team.
The Blue Hen men’s team also had a three-match winning streak snapped as they fall to 6-8 on the year, while UMBC improves to 11-5-1 on the season. Austin Longacre (at right) and Jon Schwartz picked up the only Delaware victories on the afternoon. Longacre defeated Chris Meyer 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Schwartz topped Nick Savage-Pollack 2-6, 7-6 (6), 10-8 at No. 5.
UMBC got singles wins from Irfan Shamasdin, David Jackson, Fredi Voorman and Fernando Ferreira. The Retrievers also swept the doubles as Voorman and Savage-Pollack teamed up to defeat Longacre and Andrew Blumberg 8-3 at No. 1, while Jackson and Shamasdin downed Jason Hanschmann and Greenberg 8-2 at No. 2. Barrer and Perez saw their team-high six-match doubles winning streak come to an end as they fell to Meyer and Ferreira 8-6.
The men will be back in action Friday when they host UNC Wilmington at 9 a.m. at the Delaware Field House Tennis Courts. The women will resume CAA play Saturday when they take on Hofstra at 3 p.m. at home.
