DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- The University of Delaware men's and women's tennis teams got back to their winning ways on Tuesday afternoon in sunny Daytona Beach, where they wrapped up their Spring Break tour of Florida with shutout victories over Bethune-Cookman at the City Island Tennis Complex. The women won their seventh of eight matches with a 7-0 sweep, while the men notched a 6-0 triumph of their own.
The men (7-4, 2-0 Colonial Athletic Association) pounced on the Wildcats for a 6-0 sweep, as sophomore Austin Longacre led the way with a 6-2, 6-0 first-singles win over BC's Emil Vassilev and teamed with junior Nolan Greenberg to earn an 8-0 rout of Vassilev and Stefan James at first doubles.
In other singles action, Greenberg didn't surrender a game on the way to a love-love blowout of Christian Cruz at No. 2, while sophomore third man Sam Barrer dropped the first set before rallying to a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 triumph over James and freshman
Chris Hincker toppled Wildcat No. 4 Yannick Jackson by a 6-3, 6-1 tally. Senior Jonathan Schwartz (at right) was too much for Jerome Ward in their fifth-singles match, and sophomore Camilo Perez led BC's Kristofer Martin 5-5, 30-0 at sixth singles before the match was called due to rain.
Barrer and Perez returned for an 8-3 thumping of Ward and Martin at third singles, giving the Blue Hens their final point of the day.
Senior standout Susan Pollack starred for the women's squad, which blanked Bethune-Cookman 7-0 to improve to 7-1 on the season. Pollack was a 6-4, 7-5 winner over the 'Cats' Monika Musilova at first singles, while freshman No. 2 Courtney Fenimore rolled past Andrea Paez 6-1, 6-1 and sophomore No. 3 Elena Berry followed suit with a 6-1, 6-0 win over BC's Jeneice Ward, her eighth consecutive singles victory.
Junior Amanda Campbell and senior Alexa Dragonette made quick work of their opponents at fourth and fifth singles, respectively, posting 6-0, 6-0 wins. Freshman Ivana Petrich, meanwhile, defeated an injured Shaunda Gaiter in a 1-0 walkover.
Pollack and Dragonette beat Musilova and Paez 8-5 in first-doubles action, while Campbell and Dragonette overwhelmed Ward and Reijina Hopkins in an 8-0 decision. Berry and Petrich preserved the Hens' perfection, delivering a 1-0 walkover win at third doubles.
The women's team, off to its best start since 2004-05, avenged last year's 6-1 setback to the Wildcats, while the men captured their third straight win over BC.
The Blue Hens are back in action on Thursday at James Madison, where the men take on Hofstra at noon and the women duel the Dukes at 3 p.m.
