SWARTHMORE, PA -- The University of Delaware men's tennis team began its fall season with a bang at last weekend’s Swarthmore Invitational, as sophomore standout Austin Longacre (right) led the Blue Hens to a sweep of all six titles.
Longacre, who emerged as the Hens’ top singles player as a freshman last season, defeated teammate Nolan Greenberg, 6-1, 6-3, in the Flight A singles championship. Longacre and Greenberg tore through the preliminary rounds, as neither dropped more than four games in any set.
In the second singles flight, Delaware sophomore Sam Barrer beat Swarthmore’s Marc Greenburg, 6-3, 6-0. UD’s Chris Hincker earned a spot in the final, but withdrew with an injury and was replaced by Greenburg. Sophomore Camilo Perez captured the Hens’ third title with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Jon Yu of TCNJ in Flight C singles, while senior Jon Schwartz conceded just two games to TCNJ’s Will Daly en route to the Flight D crown. With three singles wins in the tourney, Schwartz moved into a tie for 21st on Delaware’s all-time list with 38.
Laura Travis’s charges also swept the doubles titles, as Longacre and Greenberg doubled up a TCNJ pair, 8-4, in the Flight A final. Meanwhile, Perez and Schwartz, who both won their singles flights, teamed up for an 8-5 Flight B victory over teammates Jason Hanschmann and Parker Schrader. With a pair of preliminary wins, Hanschmann is now tied for 15th in UD history with 35 career doubles wins.
Delaware players won 17 of 19 singles matches in which they weren’t facing each other.
The Blue Hens also dominated the tournament last year, when they captured six of eight singles flights and two of four doubles flights in the five-team event.
The Hens return to the court on Oct. 6, when they visit Villanova.
