WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Delaware men’s and women’s tennis teams took four and five out of six singles matches, respectively, and the men took all three doubles matches while the women took two of three as both teams defeated Georgetown by scores of 6-1 (women’s) and 5-2 (men’s).

The Blue Hen men improve to 2-2 in the Spring season, and 4-2 for the 2008-09 season, and the women stay unbeaten for the season at 4-0 (2-0 in the Spring).

Delaware’s men’s team got off to a good start in No. 1 singles as junior Austin Longacre defeated David Tillem, 6-3, 7-6, 7-0. Longacre, who set the school record in 2007-08 for singles wins in a season with 22, is now 13-4 in 2008-09. His 45 career wins move him into a tie for 11th place on the career singles wins list.

Blue Hen freshman Andre Vorobyov dropped a tough 6-2, 6-4 decision in No. 2 singles against the freshman from Trinidad and Tobago, Michael Clarke. Vorobyov fell to 8-7 for the season.

Chris Hincker defeated the 6-5, 215 lb. freshman from Storrs, Conn., Andrew Bruhn easily by a score of 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, but junior Sam Barrer (top right) would have to battle for a win at No. 4 singles against the senior Adam Gross. Barrer prevailed 7-6, 7-5, 6-7, 7-4, 10-8.

Freshman Courtney Scott would then fall to Georgetown’s Kenneth Wong 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, but Piacente would finish singles play by coming back to beat Tim Walsh in N. 6 singles action, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The Blue Hens would go on to win all three doubles matches by scores of 8-1, 8-4 and 8-4.

The women’s tennis team won the first three and final two singles matches of the match, and then two of the three doubles matches.

Junior Elena Berry bounced back after early troubles in No, 1 singles to beat Aileen Shea, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Berry improved to 14-3 for the season. Sophomore Megan Doran (bottom right) stayed perfect in No. 2 singles play, beating Maxi Thiels 6-3, 6-1 to up her record to 9-0 for the season. Doran is 12-3 overall.

At No. 3 singles, the sophomore from Canada Ivana Petrich also improved to 9-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Caroline Kuehn. Petrich is 14-2 for the season and 34-5 for her athlete photocareer.

Jacquie Harrison would get Georgetown’s women’s team on the board, grinding out a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over Delaware freshman Jo Jo Gruber at No. 4 singles.

Senior Amanda Campbell (12-3) and freshman Samantha Carnall (8-6) won the last two singles matches for UD at No. 5 and No. 6 to close out singles play. They both improved to 4-0 in their respective singles rankings for the season.

The Blue Hen pairs of Berry and Gruber and Doran and Campbell would win at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to earn Delaware the point for doubles competition to close out the match. Campbell moved within four individual doubles wins of tying current Assistant Tennis Coach Susan Pollack for the most career wins in UD history.
