COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Austin Longacre (at right) earned the University of Delaware men’s tennis team its first ever match victory against the University of Maryland as the Blue Hens lost their first Spring season dual meet Saturday, 6-1.
Longacre defeated Maryland’s David Kwon in No. 1 singles play, 7-5, 4-6, 13-11. With the win, he improves to 10-4 on the season and 42-29 for the season.
Aftert that match though, Maryland would win the next five singles matches and sweep the double competition. The Blue Hens were without senior Nolan Greenberg, who is still recovering from a wrist injury he suffered during the Fall season. Head Coach Laura Travis expects to have him back in tomorrow’s match against Navy.
In No. 2 singles play, the Terrapins’ Andy Orban defeated freshman Andre Vorobyov 6-1, 6-2. The Ukraine native out of Brooklyn Tech fell to 7-5 for the season.
Nickolai Nielsen of Maryland defeated Delaware sophomore Chris Hincker 6-3, 6--0 in No. 3 singles action. Hincker fell to 10-3 for the season and 30-11 for his career.
Junior Sam Barrer dropped the No. 4 singles match to Maryland’s Boris Fetbroyt, 6-3, 6-3. Barrer is now 5-4 on the year and 34-26 for his career.
The Terrapins’ Matthies Sarrazin defeated UD freshman Courtney Scott 6-2, 6-3. The loss drops Scott to 7-2 for the season.
Finally, Maryland’s Alex Aksanov defeated Delaware sophomore Nick Piacente, 3-6, 6-1, 10-7. Piacente fell to 6-2 for the season.
In No. 1 doubles action, Maryland’s Orban and Fetbroyt shut out Delaware’s Longacre and Vorobyov, 8-0. Kwon and Nielsen defeated Hincker and Scott 8-5 in No. 2 doubles play, and John Ribaste and Arman Moussavi of Maryland defeated Barrer and junior Camilo Perez, 8-5.
Delaware is back in action tomorrow as the Blue Hens visit Navy at 12 noon tomorrow.
