Delaware Men, Women Sweep George Mason, 7-0

NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware men’s tennis team swept the singles and took two of three doubles macthes against Colonial Athletic Association foe George Mason Friday afternoon at the Delaware Field House as the Blue Hens cruised to a 7-0 victory.

With the win, Delaware improves to 10-4 (3-1 CAA) and George Mason falls to 2-6 (0-3) with the loss.The Blue Hens improve to 11-1 all-time against the Patriots, having won the last 11 meetings.

Senior Nolan Greenberg (at right) and junior Austin Longacre fell at No. 1 doubles, but the Blue Hens went on to win ever match from then on.

Sophomore Chris Hincker and freshman Courtney Scott got Delaware on a roll with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. They improved to 14-4 for the season. Finally, freshman Andre Vorobyov and junior Camilo Perez secured the doubles point at No. 3 doubles with an 8-1 victory.

In singles action, Longacre defeated Brian Fitzgerald 6-1, 6-3 in the first flight. Longacre, who set the school record in 2007-08 for singles wins in a season with 22, is now 20-4 in 2008-09. His 52 career wins are five short of a three-way tie for first on the school’s all-time career wins list.

Vorobyov followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jordan Lipstock at No. 2 singles. Vorobyov is now 13-10 in his rookie campaign.

Junior Sam Barrer defeated Matthew Vaughn at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-0, and Scott followed with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5. Senior Nolan Greenberg, who played in his first singles match of the Spring having been nursing a wrist injury, defeated Imran Nayeem, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to finish the day.

Delaware will take the court again tomorrow in Philadelphia as they take on CAA foe Drexel at 12 p.m.

In women's action, the Blue Hens swept the singles and doubles matches as they cruised to a 7-0 victory Fri. afternoon over Colonial Athletic Association foe George Mason at the Delaware Field House.

With the win, Delaware improves to 12-2 (4-1 CAA) and George Mason falls to 6-9 (0-6 CAA) with the loss. The Blue Hens are now 11-4 all-time against the Patriots, having won the last 11 straight meetings.

Junior Elena Berry got things started for Delaware, defeating Lindsay Gray 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 flight to bounce back from a tough loss against Towson yesterday. She improved to 21-6 for the season and 51-20 for her career.

At No. 2 singles, sophomore Megan Doran defeated Brooke Blackwell 6-3, 6-2. She improved to 19-6 for the season with the win.

Sophomore Ivan Petrich moved one win away from tying the school record for singles wins in a season. Her 6-0, 6-4 win over Alicia Van Zandt at No. 3 singles makes her 23-3 for the season. She needs one more win to tie Elly Giese (24-2 in 1998-99) for the season record. Petrich, in just her sophomore season, is 43-6 for her career.

At No. 4 singles, freshman Jo Jo Gruber defeated Sarah Dieffenbach 6-3, 6-0. Gruber is 20-5 in her rookie campaign, which ranks third on the school’s list of singles wins in a season by a freshman. She needs one more win to tie Petrich’s second-place mark of 21 set last season.

Senior Amanda Campbell defeated Meredith Cutchin 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. She improves to 19-5 for the season and 61-37 for her career. She is one win short of tying Karen Greenstein (1996-2000) at No. 5 on the school’s career singles wins list.

Freshman Samantha Carnall closed out singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Aryn Christman at No. 6 singles. Carnall is 17-5 in her rookie campaign. Delaware sophomore Kristen Mueller also defeated Stephanie Longueira 8-3 in an exhibition match.

The Blue Hens would go on to take all three doubles matches as they shut out their eighth opponent of the season.

Delaware will take the court again tomorrow in Philadelphia as they take on CAA foe Drexel at 12 p.m.
