ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Junior Austin Longacre (at right) and freshman Andre Vorobyov got the University of Delaware men’s tennis team off to a 2-0 lead in singles play, but the Midshipmen came storming back and swept doubles play to hand Delaware a 4-3 loss.

The Blue Hens fall to 0-2 in the Spring season, and an even 2-2 for the 2008-09 season.

Longacre defeated Navy’s Marcus Rebersak in No. 1 singles play, 6-1, 6-2. With the win, he improves to 11-4 on the season and 43-29 for his career, moving into a tie for 14th place on the school’s career singles win list.

In No. 2 singles play, Vorobyov defeated Navy’s Johnny Waters 7-6, 8-6 in the tie-breaker, and 6-3. The Ukraine native out of Brooklyn Tech improved to 8-5 for the season.

After that match, however, Navy would take three straight singles matches. First Jason Hill defeated Delaware sophomore Chris Hincker 6-3, 6-3 in No. 3 singles action. Hincker fell to 10-4 for the season and 30-12 for his career.

Junior Sam Barrer dropped the No. 4 singles match to Navy’s Ramsey Lemaich, 6-4, 6-4. Barrer is now 5-5 on the year and 34-27 for his career.

Then the Midshipmen’s Owen Bullard defeated UD freshman Courtney Scott 6-3, 6-2. The loss drops Scott to 7-3 for the season.

Delaware sophomore Nick Piacente closed out the afternoon’s singles play with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Navy’s Nick Birger. Piacente improved to 7-2 for the season, and tied the match for Delaware, 3-3.

Navy would take over from there though. In No. 1 doubles action, Waters and Zach Nicholson defeated Delaware’s Longacre and senior Nolan Greenberg, 8-4. This was Greenberg’s first action of the Spring after sitting out yesterday’s match against Maryland with a wrist injury.

Hill and Birger defeated Hincker and Scott 8-4 in No. 2 doubles play, and Lemaich and Bullard defeated Vorobyov and Barrer, 8-1.

Delaware is back in action Sun., Mar. 15 at 2 p.m. as the Blue Hens visit Lehigh.
