NORFOLK, Va. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s tennis teams completed the first of three days of competition in the Sergio Tacchini Collegiate Invitational Tournament at Old Dominion on Friday afternoon.

The first day of the tournament consisted of all doubles matches. The men’s team had winners in two draws, a winner in the back draw, and another team advanced to the finals before play was suspended. The women’s team had one winner, one finalist and one semi-finalist.

In the men’s A-2 Doubles play, Nolan Greenberg and Austin Longacre lost to NJIT’s Chiujdea Cosmin and Stephen Erickson 8-6. They would bounce back to defeat Drexel’s Joey Koeaele and Carlo Pangilinan 9-8, 7-4 in the tiebreaker.

B-2 Doubles play saw Sam Barrer and Andre Vorobyov defeat Howard’s George Diggs and Eric Chavous 9-7, and then beat Coastal Carolina’s Plamen Tzvetkov and Dimitry Vlaskin 8-4. They will eventually play a final match before the end of the tournament.

Chris Hincker and Courtney Scott defeated Chet Milot and Kevin Zingler of Loyola 8-3 and then James Madison’s Chris Armes and Yaroslav Voznenko 8-3 to reach the finals. There, they would face Villanova’s Trenton Alenik and Zack Siegler and win 8-6 to capture the Men’s Doubles C-2 draw.

In D-2 Doubles, Camilo Perez and Nick Piacente (at right) won all three of their matches to win the draw for the Blue Hens as well.

In women’s play, Elena Berry and Lauren Gruber advanced to the A-2 final by defeating Liberty’s Ekaterina Kuznetsova and Lais Souza of Liberty 8-4 and then Michele Gee and Alyssa Works of Howard 8-4. Their final match would also end 8-4, but Berry and Gruber were on the losing side as they were defeated by Mihaela Bunea (VCU) and Courtney Raucher (Virginia Tech).

Samantha Carnall and Ivana Petrich beat Villanova’s Dani Phillis and Courtney Reed 8-2, but then were bounced 8-2 in the B-2 semi-final by Penn State’s Sarah Lotto and Monika Mical.

Delaware’s Kristen Mueller teamed up with George Mason’s Alex LaCoste in C-2 play and that pair would win their first round match before losing to Delaware’s Amanda Campbell and Megan Doran. Campbell and Doran would then go on to win in the finals 8-3 over Liberty’s Fabiana Gouveia and Brittany Thomas.
