COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Delaware men's tennis team is set to begin its Spring season, as the Blue Hens visit the University of Maryland to take on the Terrapins in dual meet action at 12 noon on Sat., Mar. 7.
Delaware was led by senior Nolan Greenberg (at right), junior Austin Longacre and sophomore Chris Hincker in the Fall season as the Hens captured their second straight ECAC Open Title and dominated Saint Joseph’s and Villanova by identical scores of 6-1 in their two dual meets.
Greenberg, in his final season as a Blue Hen, ranks No. 1 on the school’s career individual doubles wins list with 46 and also ranks 11th on the school’s career singles win list with 46. He finished the Fall season with a mark of 9-2 in No. 2 singles play and an 8-1 individual overall record in doubles play. Greenberg owns a 46-37 all-time singles record at Delaware.
Longacre ranks tied for 16th in career singles wins and owns the record for singles wins in a season with 22 in 2007-08. He recorded a 9-4 season in No. 1 singles play during the Fall and a 9-2 individual overall record in doubles play. Longacre owns a 41-29 career singles record at Delaware.
Hincker, who set a record for singles wins in a season by a freshman in 2007-08 with 19, had a very impressive Fall season as well. He posted a 7-1 record in No. 3 singles play and a 10-2 singles record overall. He owns a 21-7 singles record in his young career. Hincker was also 11-1 in doubles play, competing on three separate doubles teams during the season.
Head Coach Laura Travis, in her 16th year with the Delaware men’s tennis team, will also look for contributions from freshman Andre Vorobyov. Born in Ukraine, Vorobyov was a highly-touted high school recruit out of Brooklyn Tech in Brooklyn, N.Y. Still just 18 years old, he finished the 2007 season ranked No. 3 in the 16-and-under age group in the country.
Rounding out the Hens’ non-conference schedule is Navy (Mar. 8), Lehigh (Mar. 15), Georgetown (Mar. 18), Mt. St. Mary’s (Mar. 21), Lafayette (Mar. 25), Mt. Olive (Mar. 30) and UMBC (Apr. 7). The first Colonial Athletic Association dual meet of the season will be Mar. 27 when Delaware visits Hofstra.
