 NEWARK, Del.. -- The University of Delaware men’s tennis team improved to 2-0 in dual match competition Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens won five of six singles matches on the way to a 6-1 non-league victory over Villanova at the Delaware Field House Tennis Courts.
Junior Austin Longacre (at right) improved to 8-1 in singles play and remained unbeaten in doubles play this season in leading Delaware to its fourth straight victory over Villanova.
Longacre rallied to defeat Villanova’s Alex Leeser 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 1 singles spot and the Hens got four other singles wins as Alex Vorobyov downed Brian Maher at No. 2 (6-3, 6-1), Sam Barrer upended Trenton Alenik 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4, Chris Hincker was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Zach Siegler at the No. 5 spot, and Courtney Scott beat Mike Taylor 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Hincker improved to 7-1 on the season while Scott remained perfect at 6-0 in singles action this season.
Villanova picked up its only singles wins at the No. 3 spot where the Wildcats’ Dave Shaheen handed Nolan Greenberg his first setback of the season in nine matches with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Delaware also won two of three doubles competitions as Longacre and Greenberg (5-0) defeated the tandem of Leeser and Maher 9-8 (10-8) at the No. 1 spot and Hincker and Scott (4-0) defeated Siegler and Alenik at the No. 3 spot.
Delaware will close out the fall season Oct. 10-12 when the Blue Hen compete at the Old Dominion Invitational.
