SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Both the University of Delaware men’s and women’s tennis teams, as well as six individual Blue Hen student-athletes, have been honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for their academic successes during the 2009-10 season.
The Blue Hens teams, both led by head coach Laura Travis, were selected as ITA All-Academic teams based on each squad having a cumulative grade point index of 3.2 or higher.
Individually, UD men’s players Sam Barrer, Chris Hincker, and Camilo Perez and women’s players Megan Doran, Amanda Halstrom, and Ivana Petrich were honored as ITA Scholar-Athletes. To be eligible, student-athletes must be a letterwinner, been enrolled at their school for at least two semesters, and carry a 3.5 or better grade point average.
The Delaware men were one of only 52 NCAA Division I teams to be honored while the UD women were one of 77 squads recognized. Among Colonial Athletic Association schools, only the William & Mary and UNC Wilmington men and the Drexel and UNC Wilmington women were also honored.
Barrer, a native of Reading, Pa. (Exeter High School), earned his degree in sport management from Delaware last spring after posting a 14-9 singles record during the 2009-10 season. Hincker, a native of Roanoke, Va. (Patrick Henry HS), will be a senior at Delaware this fall. A health and exercise science and physiology major, he posted a singles mark of 18-8 a year ago. Perez, a native of Bucaramanga, Columbia (La Quina Del Puente HS), earned his degree in electrical engineering with minors in mathematics and bioelectrical engineering in May. He posted a 3-5 record last season but finished with 36 career singles victories.
Doran, a native of Brigantine, N.J. (Holy Spirit HS), will be a senior exercise science major at Delaware this fall. She posted a singles record of 22-10 last season. Halstrom, a native of Bellmore, N.Y. (John F. Kennedy HS), will be a sophomore biochemistry major at UD this fall. She went 27-7 in singles play this past season. Petrich, a native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada (National Sport School), will be senior finance major with a minor in international business this fall. She posted a mark of 10-6 in singles during the 2009-10 campaign.
The Blue Hen women will begin the 2010-11 season Sept. 11-12 at the Swarthmore Tournament while the UD men will open the campaign Sept. 18-19 at the Swarthmore Tournament.
