ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The University of Delaware dropped a hard fought 4-3 match to the United States Naval Academy at the Tose Family Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
Navy (5-9 overall) outlasted Delaware (2-3 overall) in doubles action to take two of three matches and secure the doubles point, while each squad tallied three wins in singles action.
The Blue Hens tandem of senior Sam Barrer and sophomore Andre Vorobyov tallied the No. 3 doubles victory with an 8-5 victory over sophomore Zach Nicholson and sophomore Marcus Rebersak.
In singles action, Delaware recorded wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 play. Senior Austin Longacre (at right) led the Hens with a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 No. 1 victory over junior Owen Bullard, while junior Gokay Celik notched the No. 2 match in similar fashion. After taking the first set, 6-4, Celik dropped the second, 1-6, to Rebersak, before dominating the third set with a 6-1 final.
Vorobyov, the only Hen to win both his matches against Navy, defeated freshman Matt Richmond in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.
The Hens return to the court on March 10 when they travel to Maryland for a 2:30 p.m. match.
