NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s tennis team controlled play against visiting Saint Joseph’s University at the Delaware Field House Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon to ace its way to a 7-0 victory.
En route to earning the match’s lone doubles point, senior Austin Longacre and junior Gokay Celik paired to collect their fifth victory of the season at No. 1 doubles. The Delaware (1-1 overall) duo defeated the Hawks’ (0-1 overall) Jeff Kessler and Peter Cognetti, 8-4.
At No. 2 doubles, the team of junior Chris Hincker and sophomore Courtney Scott outplayed Saint Joseph’s Michael Stauble and Matt Prusack, 8-5, while sophomore Andre Vorobyov and junior Nick Piacente registered the No. 3 win. The Hens captured the third and final doubles victory as they overpowered Alex Veronis and Kevin Aquino, 8-3.
Longacre (at right), who recently broke the Hens’ all-time career victories record after a 3-0 weekend at the Lehigh University Tournament, improved his season record at the No. 1 spot to 8-2. The Landenberg, Pa. native defeated Kessler, 6-3, 6-1, for the win.
Celik upset Stauble, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, while Scott took a 6-1, 6-1 victory from Veronis at the No. 3 spot and Hincker notched a 6-1, 6-4 win over Prusack in No. 4 action. At No. 5 singles, Vorobyov easily defeated Cognetti, 6-2, 6-1, prior to senior Sam Barrer blanking Hawks’ Thomas Gates, 6-0, 6-1, for the No. 6 victory.
The Hens return to action on Oct. 24-25 when they return to Lehigh for the Lehigh Fall Tennis Championships.
