SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The University of Delaware men’s tennis team debuted its 2009-10 season at the Swarthmore Tournament on Saturday. With Delaware, Swarthmore and Johns Hopkins all in attendance, the Hens tallied a number of wins to advance five singles players and a doubles team to the championship rounds tomorrow.

Senior Austin Longacre (at right) tallied a pair of wins in Flight A doubles to advance to the championship match. Longacre, a 2009 2nd team All-Colonial Athletic Association singles selection, tallied a 6-1, 6-3 win over Swarthmore's Zak Kelm before defeating Hopkins' David Maldow 6-1, 6-4.

Also tallying a Flight A singles win, junior Gokay Celik defeated the Garnet's Stephen Youngblood 6-0, 6-1.

In Flight B action, junior Chris Hincker registered a powerful 6-2, 6-0 win over Swarthmore's Mark Wee, while sophomore Courtney Scott defeated another Garnet opponent, Maxwell Bressmen, 6-1, 6-2.

The Hens Flight B players notched back-to-back wins and will compete against one another in the championship match on day two of play.

Both defeating John Hopkins opponents in Round 2, Hinker marginally beat Jacob Barnaby in a 7-5, 4-6, 12-10 tiebreak. Scott took his second in a similar fashion, defeating Warren Elgort 6-4, 7-5.

Sophomore Andre Vorobyov downed the Blue Jays' Casey Blythe 6-3, 6-3 in flight C competition. Vorobyov will advance in his bracket of play, as will sophomore Jeff Marshall. Delaware's Marshall defeated Hopkins' Peter Vale 6-4, 6-0 in Flight D.

In doubles action, the duo of Hincker and Scott will advance to the Flight A championship after edging Wee and Bressmen, 9-7, and the team Hopkins' team of David Maldow and Andrew Wang with ease, 8-2.

The Hens will next compete on Day Two of the Swarthmore Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 20 starting at 9 a.m.
