VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The University of Delaware men’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Villanova University as the Hens opened their 2009-10 dual season play at the Villanova Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Austin Longacre (at right) led Delaware (0-1 overall) with a strong showing in the No. 1 singles spot, defeating Villanova’s (1-0 overall) Alex Leeser 6-4, 6-2. Junior Gokay Celik notched the Hens’ second and last victory of the day as the transfer from Stetson University took the Wildcats’ David Shaheen to three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, for the win.
The Blue and Gold were edged on two of the three doubles matches to drop the doubles point to host Villanova. Sophomore Courtney Scott and junior Chris Hincker won the No. 2 doubles match for Delaware defeating Mike Taylor and Alex Hanno, 8-4..
The Hens will next compete at the Old Dominion Tournament, Oct. 2-4.
