1999-2000 Delaware Men's Tennis Outlook

Head coach Laura Travis is not quite sure what to expected from a young and unproven men's tennis team in 1999-2000.

She does know that if hard work and committment mean anything, her University of Delaware squad this year should be just fine.

The Blue Hens lost four letterwinners from last year's team that went 12-10 and battled to a third place finish at the America East championships after winning the title in 1997.

Tops among those losses was Ira Bernstein, a three-year No. 1 player and four-time All-America East selection whose career singles mark of 51-19 ranks No. 3 all-time in Delaware tennis history. Also gone are No. 2 singles player Michael Murray (6-8), No. 5 player Clinton Cole (7-11), and No. 6 player Jordan Reese (9-5). Bernstein and Murray also made up the Hens' No. 1 doubles team (12-8) the last two years. Bernstein was also 8-7 with Reese in doubles.

Jordan Biel, who went 10-12 a year ago at the No. 3 spot, will sit out the fall season but will return for the key part of the schedule this spring.

"This is a young team with limited college experience," admitted Travis, who owns a six-year record of 76-37 in dual action. "However, we've had a great committment from this group and they have shown the ability to work hard. Because of the inexperience its hard to predict how we will fare. Only time will tell...."

Senior captain Christopher Johnson will most likely take over Bernstein's No. 1 spot after posting a record of 5-2 in limited action a year ago. He has never played a match at the No. 1 spot during his career but was 13-4 as a freshman in 1996-97.

Biel will most likely take over the No. 2 spot when he returns in the spring. Rounding out the rest of the group are sophomore Sean Kelly (9-6 mostly at No. 6 singles as a freshman), freshman Lee Kennedy, sophomore David Mouber (7-8 at No. 3-6 singles), first-year junior Myron Schwarcz, and sophomore Jonathan Leopold. Schwarcz and Leopold have never played a collegiate singles match although Leopold was 2-0 in doubles play a year ago.

Lee was a four-year varsity player at North Mecklenburg HS in Cornelius, NC whle Schwarcz joins the team for the first time. He was a district finalist at Upper Dublin (Pa.) High School in 1996.

Another freshman, Pat Seitz from York, Pa. (Dallastown HS) may also figure into the Blue Hens' plans in doubles play. He led Dallastown to four York County team titles and was third in districts in singles as a senior when he also competed in doubles at the state tournament.

The Blue Hens will compete in the America East Championships April 20-22 at the Concord Resort at Kiamesha Lake, NY.
