TOWSON EDGE DELAWARE IN
REGULAR SEASON FINALE
TOWSON, MD - Matt Fish downed Clinton Cole
6-4, 6-7, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to lead Towson University
to a 4-3 America East mens tennis victory over the
University of Delaware Monday afternoon.
The Blue Hens had a two-match win streak snapped to close
out the regular season with an 11-9, 4-2 America East
record. Delaware will compete at the America East Tournament
this weekend, April 30-May2, at the University of Vermont in
Burlington, VT. The champion will receive an automatic berth
to the NCAA Tournament. Towson is the defending champion
while the Blue Hens last won in 1997.
The two teams split the six singles matches as
Delawares Ira Bernstein won at No. 1, Chris
Johnson won at No. 3, and Jordan Reese won at No.
6. Towson won the doubles point, winning two of the three
matches. The Hens lone doubles win was an 8-4 victory by
Bernstein and Reese at the No. 1 spot.
Bernstein, a senior, improved his team-leading singles
record to 14-7 and improved to 50-18 for his career,
becoming just the fifth player in Delaware history to record
50 victories. He also picked up his 41st career doubles
victory to move into second on the all-time UD list. Reese
improved to 8-4 with his singles victory.
