Delaware Splits Tennis Matches vs. UMBC

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware and Maryland Baltimore County split a pair of non-league tennis matches Wednesday afternoon.

The Delaware women (12-8) posted a 5-4 win over UMBC at the Delaware Field House Courts while the UMBC men downed Delaware (9-7) by a 6-1 score at the Carpenter Sports Building Courts.

In the women's match, the Hens captured the doubles point and won three of the six singles matches on the way to defeating the Retrievers, champions of the Northeast Conference and NCAA Tournament qualifiers this season.

Freshman Elly Giese (National Cathedral/Washington, DC) won at No. 5 singles, her 13th straight win, to improve to 19-1, setting a new UD record for wins by a freshman in a season. Tracy Guerin and Rachel Dencker also won at singles while the doubles teams of Giese and Kristin Wasniewski and Karen Greenstein and Martine Street were also winners.

UMBC swept the three doubles matches and won all but one singles match to post a the victory over Delaware. The Blue Hens got their lone win at No.3 singles where Clinton Cole posted a 7-6, 6-1 win over Matt Lennox.
