Tennis Advances at America East
Championships
BURLINGTON, VT -- The University
of Delaware men's tennis team advanced to Saturday's
semifinals with a 6-1 quarterfinal win over host Vermont at
the America East Championships Friday morning.
The No. 4 seed Blue Hens (12-9) will face
No. 1 seed Hofstra, a first round 7-0 winner over New
Hampshire, Saturday at 3 p.m. The semfinals winners advance
to Sunday's finals with the champion earning a berth in the
NCAA Tournament.
Delaware captured five of the six singles
matches as Ira Bernstein won at No. 1, Jordan
Biel at No. 3, Chris Johnson at No. 3, Jordan
Reese at No. 4, and Sean Kelly at No. 5. Vermont's lone
singles was a 6-1, 6-2 victory by Hayden Aaronson over
Delaware's Clinton Cole at the No. 4 spot.
Bernstein improved his season record to a
team-leading 15-7 and won his 51st career singles victory to
move into a tie with Ken Dill (51-14 in 1979-82) for
second place on the all-time UD singles win list.
The Blue Hens won the doubles point by
taking two matches as Bernstein and Reese won at No. 1 and
Biel and Johnson won at No. 2.
Bernstein recorded his 42nd career
doubles win to move into second place on that all-time UD
list behind only Jeff Olmstead, who went 45-11 in
1972-75.
