Villanova Edges Delaware in Mens and Women's Tennis

 

NEWARK, DE -- Villanova University edged the University of Delaware in a men's and women's non-league tennis match Thursday afternoon.

The Villanova men downed Delaware 4-3 at the Carpenter Sports Building Courts while the Wildcat women downed Delaware 5-4 at the Delaware Field House Courts. The women's match went down to the final match of the day.

The Delaware men (9-6) got singles victories from Ira Bernstein at No. 1 and Jordan Reese at No. 5 and doubles wins from the teams of Bernstein and Reese at No. 1 and Jordan Biel and Chris Johnson at No. 3. Bernstein improved to 10-6 on the season in singles and moved into sixth place on the UD all-time singles wins list with a record of 46-17.

The women's matche went down to the final match of the day where Villanova's Ashley Young and Colleen Olsitnik downed Karen Greenstein and Tracy Guerin 9- 8 at No. 2 doubles.

Picking up wins for the Hens (10-8) were Erin Kamen at No. 3 singles, Elly Giese at No. 5 singles, Rachel Dencker at No. 6 singles, and Kamen and Martine Street at No. 3 doubles. Giese improved to 17-1 with her 11th straight win and moved one win shy of the UD freshman record of 18 wins.

Both Delaware teams will travel to Towson Saturday for an America East match and continue play Sunday at Mt. St. Mary's.
