Delaware and Temple Withdraw from 2004 Liberty Bell Classic
NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware and Temple University baseball teams have withdrawn from the 2004 Liberty Bell Classic following the cancellation of the school's first round matchup. The game was originally scheduled for April 14 but was postponed due to heavy rain. The team's spent the last week attempting to find a makeup date but could not come to an agreement. Consequently, Villanova University and Lehigh University will meet in the finals at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia at a date and time which have yet to be determined. Lehigh advanced to the finals with a 5-3 win over Saint Joseph's in the first round of the tournament at Goodman Field on March 30 and a 12-11 win over Lafayette on April 20 at Limeport Stadium. Villanova, meanwhile, defeated La Salle, 7-0 on April 20 at Villanova Ballpark in its first round game. The Wildcats and Explorers played to an 11-inning scoreless tie back on March 31 before playing a nine-inning contest Tuesday to determine a winner. In the other first round contest, Lafayette defeated Penn, 17-3, on March 24 at Murphy Field. The Blue Hens return to action this Friday when they travel to Maryland to open a three-game series against Colonial Athletic Association rival Towson at 3 p.m.
