athlete photoathlete photoBarry S. Miller, who has over 21 years experience in the areas of health, wellness, fitness, recreation, and athletics, returns to his position as Assisant Director of Athletics for Recreation Services at the University of Delaware in 2010-11.

Miller, who joined the UD recreation staff in 1996, assists Associate Director of Athletics Jake Okkola in all aspects of the UD recreation department, including programs, facilities, services, and personnel. He serves as chair of the Division Safety Committee, Disaster & Emergency Planning, and Property Records.

He served as interim director during the 2009-10 academic year after Kate Pohlig retired following a 20-year tenure at Delaware.

A native of Fairfield, Calif., Miller earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from California State University Chico in 1987 and his masters degree in biomechanics, teaching, and coaching form Chico in 1990.

He earned his doctorate in sport biomechanics from the University of Minnesota in 1997 and added an MBA with a concentration in finance from the University of Delaware in 2002.

He served as a graduate student at Chico in 1988-90, served as lecturer and instructor in physical education at Montgomery County Community College in Rockville, Md. in 1991-92, and was a graduate assistant and assistant program director in the Department of Recreation at Minnesota in 1994-96.

He joined the University of Delaware as an assistant professor in the Department of Health, Nutrition, and Exercise Sciences in 1996 and served for five years before taking over as Director of Fitness in 1996-99.

He was named Assistant Director of Recreation Services in July, 1999 and served in that capacity before taking over his current position last fall.

He has a private business, B&B Investments, which is an equity and option trading company. He co-authored a textbook titled Sports and Fitness Nutrition. He has consulted for several equipment manufacturers on design, use, and maintenance issues. He’s also consulted for other institutions assisting with facility design/renovations, risk management, programming, and operations.

He has taught several subjects that include Anatomy, Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, Athletic Performance, Wellness, and many sport activity classes.
In addition, he serves on the President Commission for Promotion of Racial and Cultural Diversity at Delaware and serves on the Judicial Affairs committee.

While an undergraduate at Chico, Miller played for the baseball team and was a three-year starting centerfielder. He served as team captain twice, and earned all-conference honors as a senior. He also set the school’s all-time career stolen bases record.

He also served as an assistant coach at Chico for two seasons in 1989-90 and as assistant baseball coach at Montgomery (Md.) Community College in 1992.

Miller resides in Newark with his wife, Brenda, a former basketball player at Penn State, and their sons Benjamin and Cody. He serves on the Arbour Park Civic Association.
