NEWARK, DE -- Ten University of Delaware student-athletes from spring sports teams have been selected as their team’s 2008 Blue Hen Team Sportsmanship Award winner for this past season, UD Director of Athletics Edgar N. Johnson announced.
The program, now in its fifth year, honors those student-athletes who have been outstanding role models and displayed outstanding sportsmanship towards their teammates, coaches, opponents, and game officials. The winners, who will receive a certificate noting their award at the season-ending athletics banquet, are selected by the coaching staffs of each sport.
The 2008 spring winners are senior Dan Richardson in baseball, senior Britt Murdoch in golf, sophomore Morgan Marino in women’s lacrosse, senior Evan Crowther-Washburn in men’s lacrosse, sophomore Sarah Cuje in women’s rowing, junior Marianne Marinella in softball, senior Susan Pollack (at right) in women’s tennis, sophomore Camilo Perez in men’s tennis, junior Laura Chirico in women’s outdoor track and field, and senior Jake Cohen in men’s outdoor track and field.
Richardson, a pitcher from Bear, DE (Caravel Academy), appeared in 13 games with seven starts for the Blue Hens this spring, leading Delaware to a record of 22-31. He was 0-1 with a 4.97 earned run average on the mound and struck out 28 batters in 41.2 innings. He is a leadership major at Delaware.
Murdoch, a senior marketing major from Bryn Mawr, PA (Haverford School), competed in 19 rounds this past season and posted a 77.84 stroke average, including a season-best score of 71 in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships in April. He was Delaware’s second place finisher at the CAA Tournament with a 27th place showing. He also placed 11th at the Lafayette Invitational and 14th at the Hofstra Invitational during the season.
Marino, an English major from Baltimore, MD (St. Paul's School for Girls), led the Blue Hens to an 11-6 record and a berth in the CAA semifinals this past season. She appeared in 13 games with two starts during the 2008 campaign and contributed four goals and 11 groundballs. She scored two goals in a late-season win over Villanova.
Crowther-Washburn, a senior English and journalism major from Annapolis, MD (Severn School), served as a co-captain this past season and led the Blue Hens to the CAA semifinals with a final record of 9-7. He earned first team All-CAA honors after scopping up 15 groundballs, forcing 11 turnovers, and dishing out one assist. He was a starter for Delaware’s CAA champion and NCAA national semifinal team in 2007.
Cuje, a sophomore major from Rumson, NJ ( Rumson-Fair Haven High School), did not compete this past spring but was a member of a Blue Hen team that posted a third place finish at the CAA championships in April.
Marinella, a junior from Aberdeen, NJ (Matawan Regional High School), is an honor student in marketing at Delaware. The pitcher and infielder appeared in 16 games this past season and collected four hits. In the circle, she posted a 5.25 earned run average in two appearances.
Pollack, a senior honors marketing student from Wyomissing, PA (Wyomissing Area High School), capped an outstanding career for the UD women’s tennis team in 2007-08. The team’s No. 1 player at singles and doubles all four years, she competed a career that saw her set a school record for doubles wins with 69 and rank No. 4 al-time with 67 singles win. She is a four-time All-CAA selection and is an CoSIDA Academic All-American candidate.
Perez, a sophomore honor student in electrical engineering from Bucaramanga, Columbia (La Quinta Del Puente High School), posted a record of 15-7 in singles and 23-11 in doubles this past season. He also is a CoSIDA Academic All-American nominee. His two-year singles record stands at 27-18.
Chirico, a junior business major from Dayton, NJ (South Brunswick High School), has been one of the team’s top pole vaulters over the last two seasons. She placed fifth in the event at the 2008 CAA Outdoor Championships in April and won events at Penn, Lehigh, and Rider this season. She also placed 18th in the pole vault at the ECAC championships this past weekend.
Cohen, a senior physical education major from Randolph, NJ (Randolph High School), competed at the Penn Relays and won the Philadelphia Master’s Open title in the pole vault this spring. He also placed eighth in the event at the 2008 CAA Outdoor Championships in April.
All 10 student-athletes will be honored with their awards at the annual Delaware Athletics Awards Banquet May 22. The men will hold their awards luncheon at the Bob Carpenter Center at 12 noon while the women’s awards banquet will take place at 5 p.m. at the Trabant Student Center.
