NEWARK, DE -- Six University of Delaware student-athletes from winter sports teams have been selected as their team’s 2007-08 Blue Hen Team Sportsmanship Award winner for this past season, UD Director of Athletics Edgar N. Johnson announced.

The program, now in its fifth year, honors those student-athletes who have been outstanding role models and displayed outstanding sportsmanship towards their teammates, coaches, opponents, and game officials. The winners, who will receive a certificate noting their award at the season-ending athletics banquet, are selected by the coaching staffs of each sport. The spring sports winners will be announced later this month.

The 2007-08 winter winners are junior Dave Schwartz in men’s indoor track & field, sophomore Kellyn Wright in women’s indoor track & field, senior Adam Blomberg (at right) in men’s swimming & diving, junior Emily Watts in women’s swimming & diving, senior Kyle DeHaven in women’s basketball, and freshman D.J. Boney in men’s basketball.

Schwartz, a political science and Russian major from West Orange, NJ (West Orange High School), is a two-year letterwinner in the throwing events for the Blue Hens. He had a season-best throw of 46-feet, 11 1/2-inches in the weight throw during the indoor season and placed fourth overall in the hammer throw at the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association outdoor championships back in April.

Wright, a psychology and sociology major from Thorndale, PA (Coatesville High School), is a two-year letterwinner for the UD women’s track and field teams and is one of the squad’s top middle distance runners. She captured the 500 meter race at the Delaware Indoor Invitational this past season and finished 10th in the 800 meters at the 2008 CAA outdoor championships in April.

Blomberg, an honor student majoring in physics with a minor in business management and management information systems, earned the award for the second straight year. The Kennewick, WA (Kamiakin High School) native was named the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s swimming for the second straight year earlier this spring and captured the 400 freestyle relay at the CAA championships back in February.

Watts, a food science major from Lansdale, PA (North Penn High School), earned her third letter this past season as one of the team’s top backstroke specialist. She placed sixth in the 200 backstroke and 11th overall in the 100 backstroke at the 2008 CAA swimming championships back in February.

DeHaven, a criminal justice major from Herndon, VA (Herndon High School), was the top member of the Blue Hen women’s basketball squad this past season when she earned third team All-CAA honors as a guard and was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year. She led the team in scoring (10.6 points per game) and assists (105) and led the nation with 113 steals.

Boney, a sport management major from Wilmington, DE (Tatnall School), played in 31 games with seven starts as a freshman this past winter and led the Blue Hens to a record of 14-17 and a quarterfinal berth in the CAA Tournament. He averaged 4.1 points and 1.1 rebounds per game and also drained 21 three-pointers.
