NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware celebrated national Student Athlete Day April 17 at Fred. P. Rullo at the UD Athletics complex.
The annual event, which attracted over 100 student-athletes from Delaware’s 23 intercollegiate teams, featured food, games, music, and prizes. The event was coordinated by the UD Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
Winning contests during the evening were track and field and cross country runner Toni Riggi and golfer Matt Grobstein in the pie-eating contest; women’s soccer player Jennifer Krepps and women’s rower Betsy Seeger won the women’s obstacle course; golfers Tyler Kupper and Mike Strasburg won the men’s obstacle course, and women’s soccer players Kate Gallagher and Katie Beekman won the water balloon toss.
"This year's Student-Athlete Day was a tremendous success,” said Kupper, the president of the University of Delaware SAAC. “About 125 student athletes, representing almost every varsity sport, attended. Student-Athlete Day provides a perfect opportunity to celebrate all the successes of our respective teams in a fun, friendly environment.
"I would especially like to recognize Bill Hackett at Dining Services for his generous donation of the food we enjoyed tonight, and Sue Groff, Deb Roche and the Student Athlete Advisory Council Executive Board for putting on this great event."
