NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware athletics department has announced the winners of the Blue Hen Team Sportsmanship Awards for the 2005-2006 academic year.
Now in its third year, the Blue Hen Sportsmanship program honors those student-athletes who have been outstanding role models and displayed outstanding sportsmanship towards their teammates, coaches, opponents, and game officials. The winners, who receive a certificate noting their award at the season-ending athletics banquet, are selected by the coaching staffs of each sport.
This year’s recipients are: Kevin DuPrey (men's cross country), Matt Arbaugh (men’s indoor track), Carly Campana (field hockey), Lauren Carrigan (women’s lacrosse), Kristine Gneiss (volleyball), Matt Haney (men’s soccer), Ellen Heinz (women’s swimming), Laura Heenan (women’s indoor track), Adam Liebman (men’s tennis - at right), Andy Lynch (men’s outdoor track), Brooke Maguire (women’s cross country), J.J. Oakley (golf), Cami Off (women’s rowing), Asha Quant (women’s outdoor track), Sonny Riccio (football), Brent Rogers (baseball), Cory Sanderson (men’s swimming), Tommy Scherr (men’s lacrosse), Julie Schiller (women’s tennis), Lindsey Shover (women’s soccer), Carolynn Sloat (softball), Karleena Tobin (women’s basketball), and Rulon Washington (men’s basketball).
Liebman earned the award for the third straight year.
"We are once again proud to honor these individuals for their efforts in showing true sportsmanship throughout the year," said University of Delaware Director of Athletics Edgar N. Johnson. "These special student-athletes have shown that you can be an outstanding competitor on the field and still accomplish your goals with great character and sportsmanship while showing respect to your opponents and officials."
DuPrey, a senior from Strasburg, PA (Lampeter-Strasburg), was a four-year letterwinner for the UD cross country team; Arbaugh, a junior from Owings Mills, MD (Loyola Blakefield HS), pole vaulted 14-3 1/4 during the indoor season and was ninth in the pole vault at the Colonial Athletic Association track and field championships this past spring; Campana, a senior co-captain from Piscataway, NJ (Piscataway HS), had one assist from her defensive position in field hockey this past fall; Carrigan, a senior defender from Malvern, PA (West Chester East) collected 28 groundballs and 15 caused turnovers this spring for the UD women’s lacrosse team; Gneiss, a junior outside hitter from Floral Park, NY (Floral Park HS), was second on the team with a .258 hitting percentage this past fall in volleyball; Haney, a junior co captain from Wilmington, DE (St. Elizabeth’s), was a third-year starter this past fall in men’s soccer and earned CoSIDA Academic All-American honors; and Heinz, a sophomore from West Chester, PA (Henderson HS), placed in the top eight in three events at the CAA Women’s Swimming championships in February.
Heenan, a senior from Cherry Hill, NJ (Cherry Hill HS), placed 26th in the ECAC 4 x 400 meter relay this past winter for indoor track and field; Liebman, a senior from Westport, CT (Staples HS), posted an 11-11 record in singles in men’s tennis this season; Lynch, a junior from Springfield, PA (Cardinal O’Hara), placed eighth in the shot put and 10th in the discus at the 2005 CAA Men’s Outdoor Track and Field championships in April; and Maguire, a freshman from Marblehead, MA (Marblehead HS), placed 52nd at the CAA Women’s Cross Country championships this past fall; Oakley, a senior from Lewes, DE (Cape Henlopen HS), recorded a 76.41 stroke average for the UD golf team this season; and Off, a sophomore from Somers Point, NJ (Mainland Regional), placed fifth in the Varsity Fours race at the 2006 CAA Women’s Rowing championships in April.
Quant, a junior from Willingboro, NJ (Holy Cross HS), placed fifth in the 4 x 400 meter relay and 10th in the 400 meters at the 2006 CAA Women’s Outdoor Track and Field championships in April; Riccio, a senior quarterback and co-captain from Ellwood City, PA (Lincoln HS), was a two-year starter for the UD football team and threw for 1,869 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2005; Rogers, a senior outfielder from Claymont, DE (Mt Pleasant HS), is currently batting .222 with six RBI as a backup for the UD baseball team this spring; Sanderson, a junior co-captain from Kensington, MD (Einstein HS), placed 19th in the 400 individual medley at the 2006 CAA Men’s Swimming & Diving championships in February; Scherr, a sophomore Owings Mills, MD (Mt. St. Joseph’s HS), started all 17 games for the UD men’s lacrosse team and ranked among the CAA leaders in save pct. (.570) and goals against average (8.55); and Schiller, a sophomore from Toms River, NJ (Toms River North), went 6-5 in singles action for the women’s tennis squad this season.
Shover, a senior goalkeeper and co-captain from Lancaster, PA (Penn Manor HS), ranked among the CAA leaders in save percentage (.833) and goals allowed average (1.02) in 2005 and was named the 2005-06 University of Delaware Outstanding Senior Female Athlete of the Year; Sloat, a junior pitcher from Ballston Lake, NY (Shenendehowa HS), was 19-16 with a 1.85 earned run average for the UD softball team this spring and earned second team All-Mid Atlantic Region honors; Tobin, a senior co-captain and guard from Baltimore, MD (Friends School), scored 74 points and dished out 14 assists as a backup guard in women’s basketball this past season; and Washington, a senior co-captain and guard from Jacksonville, Fl (Edward White HS), averaged 8.9 points per game and hit 53 three-pointers for the UD men’s basketball team this past winter.
