Hofstra Stuns Top-Seeded Towson in Nightcap of CAA Semifinals, 3-2 NEWARK, DE -- Fourth-seeded Hofstra University rallied from a 2-1 games deficit to upset top-seeded Towson University 3-2 (30-20, 22-30, 25-30, 30-27, 15-13) in the second semifinal of the 2003 CAA Volleyball Championship at the University of Delaware's Carpenter Sports Building. Hofstra advances to Saturday's title match of the CAA Championship at 7 p.m., against second-seeded George Mason, who defeated James Madison in the day's earlier semifinal match. Hofstra sophomore outside hitter Tessa Sphar (San Jose, Calif.) recorded five of her match-high 23 kills in the decisive fifth game to complete the Pride's rally. Sphar, a first-team All-CAA selection, added 12 digs to register her 15th double-double of the season, while leading the Pride in kills for the 18th time this season. Second-team All-CAA selection junior Alessandra Pollo (Savona, Italy) also registered her 15th double-double of the season for the Pride with 19 kills and a team-high 18 digs, while freshman Silvia Maier (Buenos Aires, Argentina) posted a double-double with 51 assists and 15 digs. Hofstra senior April Nick (Monarch Beach, Calif.) added 13 kills and three block assists in the victory. Hofstra is the first CAA team to beat Towson this season, after the Tigers posted a 14-0 regular season conference record. Hofstra was the only conference team to take Towson to five games during the regular season, falling to the Tigers in five on Oct. 17, in Towson. With the win, Hofstra improves to 29-4 all-time against Towson. The Tigers were paced by four players in double-figure kills, including first-team All-CAA junior Liz Goubeaux (Lockport, N.Y.) who tallied a team-high 14 kills. Freshman Christina Grempler (Severna Park, Md.), junior Sarah Miller (Aurora, Ill.) and sophomore April Hoffman (Omaha, Neb.) each recorded 12 kills for the Tigers in defeat. First-team All-CAA selection junior setter Mary Clare Coglan (Northridge, Calif.) set a new Towson single-season record for assists with her 1,400th of the season. Coglan dished out 47 assists in the five-game loss in surpassing the previous single-season record of 1,359. Hofstra improves to 13-16 on the season, while Towson ends the 2003 campaign at 25-6.
