I. AWARDS

 

1. ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARDS

a. The Alumni Association provides funding for Most Valuable Participant (MVP) awards in each of the men's and women's sport programs as well as for two Outstanding Senior Athlete Awards, one for the overall men's program and one for the overall women's program.

b. In the women's program, MVP recipients are determined by vote of all participating athletes on each respective team.

The single recipient (no ties) will be that participant whom the team members feel has contributed the most to the team through her skills and attitude throughout the season.

All awards are named "Alumni Association MVP" for each of the individual sport programs." (Approved by AGB 12/8/05)

c. The Outstanding Senior Athlete for the women's program is determined by the following procedure:

1)Each team at season end will nominate one senior from its team as a candidate for Outstanding Senior Athlete. Head coach will provide the name to the Assistant Director, Media Relations when requested, but no later than April 13th.

Each head coach may also nominate one senior member from his/her team.

A ballot including biographical sketches for each of these nominees, will be prepared by the Sports Information Office and circulated on April 15th.

2)Each head coach will vote for his/her top three choices in rank order and submit the list to the Senior Woman Administrator no later than April 22nd. The top vote- getter will be awarded five points, the second, three points and the third, one point. Composite results will determine the winner.

Coaches may vote for their own team members.

The Assistant Director, Media Relations will also be issued a ballot and vote in rank order for his/her top three choices.

3)The single recipient (no ties) will be that person who has contributed the most to the overall women's athletics program through her skill and attitude throughout the course of her athletics career at the University of Delaware.

The recipient must have senior classification or have completed eligibility in at least one sport and must have attended the University and participated in the athletics program for at least two years. Student-athletes would be eligible to receive the award one time only.

d. The following named single MVP (no ties) awards for the men's program are determined by vote of team members and/or coaches:

1) Baseball - Pape Lukk Alumni Association MVP Award

2) Basketball - Colonel C. B. Shafer Alumni Association MVP Award

3) Cross Country - Alumni Association MVP Award

4) Football - Alumni Association MVP Award

5) Golf - John J. DeLuca/Scotty Duncan Alumni Association MVP Award

6) Indoor Track and Field - Alumni Association MVP Award

7) Lacrosse - Alumni Association MVP Award

8) Outdoor Track and Field - Alumni Association MVP Award

9) Soccer - Alumni Association MVP Award

10) Swimming and Diving - Jack and Hugh Dougherty Alumni Association MVP Award

11) Tennis - Alexander J. Taylor Alumni Association MVP Award

e. The single Outstanding Senior Athlete (no ties) for the men's program is determined by the following procedure:

1)Each head coach may nominate an outstanding male senior athlete from his/her sport if he/she feels one qualifies.

2)A ballot is prepared including all nominees and all head coaches vote for one individual to be designated as Outstanding Senior Athlete. Nominations are solicited and ballots are prepared by the Assistant Director, Media Relations.

2. CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS

a. Team picture plaques are provided to each member of a conference championship team, regular season conference champion team and to each individual conference champion. These plaques are also provided for members of teams placing in the top four in NCAA national championship competition.

b. AGB 4/99

For all sport programs that do not have automatic team qualification to the NCAA Championships as a result of winning the conference championship, lustrium rings will be provided to team champions, instead of championship picture plaques. If the team is subsequently selected for NCAA championship participation, they will receive picture plaques. Team champions in programs with automatic qualification will continue to receive both lustrium rings and picture plaques.

This will apply only to conference championship team champions, not regular season champions nor individual event winners. The number of awards provided for each team will be equal to the maximum reimbursable travel party limitation established by the conference. Where no such limitation is established, the number of awards will be limited to the NCAA official travel party (i. e. , men's lacrosse) or the University-established maximum (e. g. , football).

Head coaches wishing to purchase additional rings may, with the approval of the Director of Athletics, do so using supplemental funds.

3. LETTERWINNER AWARDS

a. Requirements
1)A varsity letter will be awarded upon the recommendation of the coach and completion of the sport's standards listed below.

2)In each sport, a coach may recommend a varsity letter award to any senior player who has participated as a member of the team for at least three years including his/her senior year (service award).

3)All student-athletes receiving varsity letters must complete regular and post-season play and receive the coach's recommendation.

4)Coaches may recommend for a varsity award any athletes unable to meet the established standards due to illness, injury, other extenuating circumstances or fulfilling an unusual service for the team.

b. Letterwinner awards will be given in specific sports according to the following standards: (All requirements refer to varsity level play. )

1)Baseball and Softball - Men and Women

Non-Pitchers: Participation in 50% of the regular season contests or of the entire season including post-season play.

Pitchers: Participation in 20% of the regular season contests or of the entire season including post-season play.

2)Basketball - Men and Women

Participation in 50% of the total number of halves played in the regular season or of the entire season including post- season play.

3)Cross Country - Men and Women

Finishing in a scoring (top 5) or displacement (top 7) position in 50% of scheduled regular season meets or finishing in a scoring position (top 5) in a post-season championship event.

4)Field Hockey

Participation in 50% of the regular season contests or of the entire season including post-season play

5)Football

Entrance into 1/3 of the quarters of play in the regular season or in the entire season including post-season play, or being a member of a specialty team for an entire season.

6)Golf

Participation and finishing in a scoring position in 50% of the regular season matches or scoring in a post-season championship event.

7)Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field - Men and Women

Scoring an average of 3 points in each regular season meet, or scoring in a post-season championship event or establishing/tying a record during regular season or post- season championship event.

8)Lacrosse - Men and Women

Participation in 50% of the regular season contests or of the entire season including post-season play.

9) Rowing

Participation in the 4 top priority boats for 50% of the regular season (spring) races. (Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+, and Novice 8+) (Approved by AGB Executive Committee, April 2004) (Approved by AGB, 5/20/04)

10)Soccer - Men and Women

Participation in 50% of the regular season contests or of the entire season including post-season play.

11)Swimming and Diving - Men and Women

Scoring an average of 3 points for each regular season meet, or scoring in a post-season championship event or establishing/tying a record during regular season or post- season championship event.

12)Tennis - Men and Women

Participation in 50% of the regular season matches or of the entire season including post-season play.

13)Volleyball

Participation in at least one game in 50% of the regular season matches or of the entire season including post- season play.

c. Criteria for Letter Awards for Student Managers

1)Managers must meet the same academic eligibility requirements as student-athletes.

2)When more than one manager is affiliated with a team, the head coach shall designate one as head manager.

3)A head manager will qualify for a first year letterwinner award after one season of service and a second year award after two seasons.

4)An assistant manager will qualify for a first year letterwinner award after two seasons of service. (This implies a lesser time commitment and level of responsibility by the assistant manager(s). ) He/she will be eligible for a second year award after three seasons.

5)Managers who have received a 2nd year letterwinner award and have served as manager for three or four years qualify to receive the 3rd/4th year letterwinner award.

d. Letterwinner Awards

1)1st year letterwinners will receive a certificate.

2)2nd year letterwinners will receive a jacket.

3)3rd year letterwinners will receive a watch.

4)4th year letterwinners will receive a certificate mounted on a plaque signifying their athletics contributions. (AGB 12/96)

5)All seniors will receive a senior certificate. Seniors who have lettered either three or four years will have 3rd or 4th year letterwinner printed on their certificate.

6)A 1st year senior letterwinner with two years as a team member will receive a jacket.

7)Participants may receive the jacket and watch awards only once, each.

8)Athletes who letter in more than one sport may have the additional sports added to the jacket by submitting it to the Supervisor, Events.

e. General

1)Student trainers are not eligible to receive varsity letters.

2)Statisticians, scorekeepers, etc. will not qualify for a letter award unless managerial duties are also assumed by them.

3)At the conclusion of the sport season, head coaches will receive a form from the Executive Secretary to the Director on which to recommend letterwinners and participants including whether it is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th year award. The AGB approves all letterwinner awards.

4)Team equipment awards - AGB 3/81

The AGB will be the only source of awards for athletes. Coaches may not give students any athletics equipment which they obtained from the University for use while participating.

Head coaches may, however, request permission, and with advance written approval of the Director of Athletics, issue:

a)Expendable (defined as inventory that is deemed by the designated equipment cage personnel to be unusable for the following season) practice apparel to team members, and

b)Approved athletics apparel items to student-athletes who have completed their eligibility.

Specific items to be issued must be clearly indicated in the request to the Director.

Budgets will not increase to accommodate this.

4. NCAA PARTICIPATION/CHAMPION AWARDS

a. Participation Awards

Team Sports

1)NCAA participation awards will be presented to all student members and approved coaching staff of the official NCAA travel party representing the institution at the event. This number will not exceed the maximum travel party designated by the NCAA for that sport.

2)The head coach will designate recipients.

3)Any deviation from this must be approved in advance by the Director of Athletics. Any additional approved rings will be supported by the supplemental funds of the sport program. (AGB 12/98)

4)Injured players who would, except for their injury, have been on the travel squad may receive the NCAA participation award, funded by the sport's supplemental funds, upon approval by the head coach.

5)Approved "roster players" who were not in the travel party, as well as staff members who have been approved to purchase awards at their own expense will be provided an order form by the head coach to process orders individually.

6)One order per team shall be placed. After initial consultation with the head coach, a list of all approved recipients will be submitted to the head coach for final approval. No additions should be made after that time.

Individual Sports

1)NCAA participation awards will be presented to all student participants who represent the institution in competition at the NCAA event.

2)A head coach who represents the institution as a part of the official NCAA travel party is eligible to receive the award. He/she may designate another coaching staff member to receive the award instead of himself/herself, if desired.

3)Any deviation from this must be approved in advance by the Director of Athletics. Any additional approved rings will be supported by the supplemental funds of the sport program. (AGB 12/98)

General

1) For both team and individual sports, upon approval by the head coach, an option to purchase rings will be available to additional individuals affiliated with a team (including full-time University employees) at their own expense.

2) The NCAA Championship Participation Award will be a silver (lustrium) ring, except that conference championship team champions in sports with no automatic NCAA qualification, which already receive rings, will receive picture plaques.

NOTE: Players are not permitted to upgrade the awards they receive (e. g. , pay extra to receive a gold instead of a silver [lustrium] ring. )

b. National Champion Awards

1)NCAA National Champion Awards will be presented to all University student and staff members who represent the institution as a part of the NCAA official travel party at the championship. This number will not exceed the maximum awards permitted by the NCAA for that sport.

2)For individual sports, a specialty coach who actually coached the championship participant will qualify for an award, whether a part of the travel party or not.

3)Any deviation from this must be approved in advance by the Director of Athletics. Any additional approved rings will be supported by the supplemental funds of the sport program. (AGB 12/98)

NOTE: Upon approval by the head coach an option to purchase rings will be available to additional individuals affiliated with a team including University staff, at their own expense.

4) The NCAA National Champion Award will be a gold ring.

5. OTHER AWARDS

a. The ECAC Merit Medal goes to the senior male and female athlete with the highest academic indexes.

b. AGB 12/98

1)Only the Alumni Association M. V. P. , outstanding Senior Athlete and E. C. A. C. Merit Medal Awards will be considered the official awards for presentation at the annual men's and women's program-wide intercollegiate athletics banquets. Other awards should be recognized/presented at another venue, such as end of season team get-togethers.

2)The following policies apply to the establishment of new awards.

a)In order to establish an endowed named award, a sustained account of no less than $5,000. 00 must exist.

b)To establish a new award, the proposal must include a description of the following:

a. Name, rationale, and purpose of award.

b. Source of funding.

c. Criteria for recipient (Examples may include: G. P. A. , Junior, Senior, Manager, best offensive or defensive player, etc. )

d. Award type: (Cup, Plaque, Frame, etc. )

e. Amount of award (Range)

f. Selection of award (Coaches selection, teams selection, Administration, etc. )

g. Administration of award (How, when, where is it to be presented).

c) An award must be approved by the Athletics Governing Board prior to any presentation or announcement.

d) An amount of funding equal to five times the annual cost of the award must be identifiable in a University account before consideration as an award.
