NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware softball team raised its winning streak to nine straight games Saturday as the Blue Hens got impressive pitching efforts from senior Kristi O'Connell (Good Counsel/Elmsford, NY) and junior Susan Dugan (Rising Sun, Md. HS/Newark, DE) and swept Drexel in an America East doubleheader at Delaware Field. The Blue Hens (18-5, 6-0 America East) shut down the Dragons (6-9, 2-4) on three hits to win the opener 1-0 then repeated the shutout with a three-hitter for a 2-0 win in the nighctap. The Hens are a perfect 12-0 at home this season, setting a school record for consecutive home wins, and the team's 6-0 start in conference play is the best for Delaware since the 1982 team started out 6-0 in the East Coast Conference. Delaware and Drexel will meet in another doubleheader today (Sunday) at 12 noon at Delaware Field. In the opener, O'Connell tossed a three-hitter to improve to 8-4 on the season and win her 50th career game. In the process, O'Connell ran her streak of scoreless innings pitched to 32 to break the Delaware record of 31 2/3 set by Jill Rosen in 1986. O'Connell got out of a jam in the first inning when she struck out the Dragons' Cassie Snow with runners on second and third. She finished with eight strikeouts and walked just two Drexel batters. Delaware got the only run it would need in the sixth inning when Mandy Welch (McDonough/La Plata, MD) singled to open the inning, advanced to second on a sacrifice, and moved to third on a single by Chris Brady (Bensalem, Pa. HS). Welch, who was 3 for 3 to pace the Hens at the plate, then scored on a wild pitch by Drexel loser Lori Swanson (3-3). Delaware senior first baseman Erin Kelly (Liberty/Bethlehem, PA) was 2 for 3 for the Hens and collected her 100th career hit with a second inning single. In the nightcap, Dugan (10-0) allowed just three hits to post the shutout and her school record 10th straight victory. She struck out three Drexel batters and stranded five runners. Drexel's Jodi Devine had two of the three hits. Delaware scored one run in the first inning on an RBI single by Lauren Mark (Ursuline Academy) and added an insurance run in the sixth when Mark reached base on an error and scored on an RBI double by catcher Christy Wilkins (Chenango Valley/Binghamton, NY).
