Canisius
Knocks Blue Hens Out of Tournament; Mark Has Big
Day
GREENVILLE, NC -- The University
of Delaware softball team opened the day with an 8-2 win
over Manhattan but followed with losses to East Carolina and
Canisius and were eliminated from the Pirate Softball
Classic at East Carolina University Saturday
afternoon.
After the win over Manhattan, the Hens
(2-3) fell to host East Carolina 1-0 in the final game of
pool play. In the first round of playoffs, the No. 3 seed
Hens fell to No. 2 Canisius 4-3.
In the win over Manhattan, the Hens
erupted for six runs in the sixth inning on the way to the
victory. Third baseman Lauren Mark (Ursuline Academy)
went 3 for 4 with three runs batted in while shortstop
Carolyn Wasilewski was 1 for 3 with a double and a
run scored. Freshman Krissy Chrisztopulosz was 2 for
3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Susan Dugan (1-1)
picked up the win in relief, allowing just one hit in three
innings for the Hens.
In the second game, East Carolina scored
the game's only run when Amekea McDougald connected on a
two-out RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning for
the win. Denise Reagan allowed just four hits in pitching
the shutout for ECU. Delaware's Kristi O'Connell
(1-1) took the loss despite allowing just four hits. Mark
was 1 for 3 for the Hens.
In the elimination game, Canisius scored
two runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Jill Iacono
and a passed ball to overcome a 3-2 deficit. O'Connell (1-2)
took the loss in relief for the Hens despite eight
strikeouts in three innings. Mark went 2 for 4 with a double
and run scored, Wasilewski was 2 for 2 and scored a run, and
Erin Kelly was 1 for 3 for the Hens, who banged out
eight hits. Veronica Maher picked up the win for
Canisius.
