Blue Hens Run Win Streak to Seven with Twinbill Sweep

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware softball team ran its win streak to seven straight games with a doubleheader sweep of Mt. St. Mary's Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Field.

The Blue Hens (9-4) banged out 11 hits in winning the first game 10-0 in five innings and captured the nightcap 3-1 after going down 1-0 in the second inning. Mt. St. Mary's fell to 3-7 and remained winless in 10 meetings vs. the Blue Hens.

In the opener, Delaware got on the board quickly with three runs in the first inning and two in the second on their way to their third straight shutout. Centerfielder Chris Brady (Bensalem, Pa. HS) went 2 for 2 and knocked in two runs while Mandy Welch (McDonough/LaPlata, MD) was 2 for 3 and scored two runs. Lauren Mark (St. Mark's HS) had an RBI double and also scored a run for the Blue Hens.

Senior Kristi O'Connell (4-3) got the win in the first game, going four innings and allowing just one hit while striking out two. O'Connell (Good Counsel/Elmsford, NY) won her 46th career game at Delaware to break the record of 45 she shared with former teammate Krysta Pidstawski. Freshman Brooke May pitched a scoreless fifth inning for the Blue Hens.

In the second game, Mt. St. Mary's jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Nola Occhipinti in the second inning off Delaware starter Susan Dugan (Perryville, Md. HS). But Delaware came back with two runs in the second thanks to three Mountaineer errors and never looked back. The Hens also scored a run in the third on an RBI single by Mark. Dugan allowed just five hits to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Welch went 1 for 3 and extended her hitting streak to nine games in the second game while freshman Krissy Chrisztopulosz went 2 for 3 with a double.
