O'Connell Gets Win, Save as Hens Sweept at UVA

CHARLOTTESVILE, VA -- The University of Delaware softball squad closed out a successful University of Virginia Cavalier Classic showing with wins over Eastern Kentucky and Wright State Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Hens (5-4), who went 3-1 during the two-day tournament, downed Eastern Kentucky (2-7) 6-0 on Kristi O'Connell's five-hitter and followed with a 3-1 win over Wright State (6-7) thanks to two first ninning runs.

In the opener, O'Connell pitched six shutout innings, allowing just five hits, to improve to 2-3 on the season. Brooke May pitched a perfect seventh inning for the Hens. O'Connell's 44 career wins is just one shy of the school record of 45 set by Krysta Pidstawski in 1996-99.

Delaware banged out 10 hits with Chris Brady, Erin Kelly, and Melissa Basilio each knocking in two runs. Mandy Welch was 3 for 4 and scored two runs from the leadoff spot for the Hens. Centerfielder Kelly Pikula had three of the Colonel's five hits.

In the second game, Blue Hen pitcher Susan Dugan (3-1) got the win, allowing just four hits and one earned run in six innings before giving, way to O'Connell, who picked up her first save of the season with two strikeouts in the seventh inning.

Delaware scored two first inning runs on an error and on an RBI double by Lauren Mark. Wright State pulled to within 2-1 on an RBI single by Annie Divac in the fifth inning, but the Hens added some insurance later in the inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Brady.

Welch and O'Connor were named to the All-Tournament team.
