"America East Player of the Year" Lisa
Ciavardini tripled off the right field fence
batting in second baseman Christine Moran to
lead second-seeded Hofstra University over
fourth-seeded Towson University, 4-0, in the
sixth game of the America East Softball
Championship at Delaware Field.
The Hofstra University Pride
(35-24) will now play the Towson University
Tigers (35-25-1) in game seven, the championship
game beginning at 2:30 today. Today marked the
first time in conference history that the top
seed did not advance to the championship round
(11th tournament).
Junior Christine Moran went
two-for-four on the day for Hofstra and batted
in the first run of the game in the fifth inning
when Heather Brousseau who reached on a walk,
and stole second, scored to give the Pride a 1-0
lead.
Moran singled again to start
the seventh inning for Hofstra. Ciavardini
belted a one-out triple off the right field
fence scoring Moran, and breaking the Hofstra
all-time record for RBIs (144) after batting in
her 145th RBI of her career. Amanda Hallaway
answered with a single to left, scoring
Ciavardini to give the Pride a 3-0 lead. Sasha
Blake came on to pinch run for Hallaway, stole
second, and scored on a Lindsay Sawyer single to
left. Sawyer went 3 for 3 for the Pride, all
singles.
Towson's Chris Navarro
singled to start the seventh inning for the
Tigers, Sara Foster reached on a fielder's
choice, but Navarro was forced out at second.
Julia Cappelli flied out to left field, Marisa
Moore reached on a fielder's choice, and Foster
was out at second to end the game, and force
game seven.
Freshman pitcher Shannon
Luther fired seven shutout innings, scattering
three hits in seven innings pitched, with one
strikeout, and one walk in the win for the
Pride. Luther improved to 17-13 on the season.
Tiger pitcher Kathleen O'Hara (10-11) allowed
nine hits over 6.2 innings, with two strikeouts,
and three walks. Julie Hughes who came on in
relief for Towson pitched one-third of an
inning, allowing one hit.
