Newark, Del.- Meaghan Almon scored the game winning run on a wild pitch as the second-seeded Hofstra University Pride defeated the fourth-seeded Towson University Tigers, 4-3, in 11 innings in the championship game of the America East Softball Championship at Delaware Field.

Towson's Kathleen O'Hara escaped a jam ino the seventh and held off the Pride until the 11th.

The Pride, who won their fourth straight America East Softball title finish championship play with a 36-24 record, and a 4-1 record in the tournament. The Tigers end the season with a 35-26-1 record, and a 2-2 record in the tournament.

LaMeka Anderson led off the second inning for the Pride singling to center, Amanda Hallaway singled to third, and Lindsay Sawyer followed with an RBI double scoring Anderson. Jessica Luna answered with a single up the middle, and Hallaway scored to give Hofstra a 2-0 lead in game seven.

Ruth Wilson singled to left field to start off the third for the Tigers. Lisa Pollock hit an RBI single to right field scoring Wilson, and tightening the Pride's lead to one. Pollock who went two-for-five on the day singled to start the sixth inning for Towson. Stacey Smith responded with a single, and Chris Navarro hit a two-out triple, driving in the go-ahead runs in the top of the sixth inning for the Tigers.

With the Pride down 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh, LaMeka Anderson belted a triple down the right field line to start the inning. Ciavardini responded with a single up the middle, Anderson crossed the plate, leaving the Tigers and the Pride tied 3-3, going into extra innings.

Hofstra's LaMeka Anderson tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.

After a 25 minute rain delay in the 11th inning, play resumed, and Almon walked to begin the inning for Hofstra. Heather Brousseau reached on a fielder's choice advancing Almon to second. Christine Moran gounded out, and Almon advanced to third. Almon scored the game winning run on a Kathleen O'Hara wild pitch to end the 11 inning game.

Shannon Luther scattered eight hits, while striking out two, and walking zero in gaining her 18th win of the season. Beth Miller pitched six innings, allowing 11 hits, three runs, and one walk. Kathleen O'Hara came on in relief for Towson pitching 4.2 innings, with one hit, one run, one strikeout, and one walk.

Stacey Smith, Chris Navarro, and Lisa Pollock of Towson University, and Heather Brousseau, LaMeka Anderson, Lindsay Sawyer, and Shannon Luther of Hofstra University joined Nicole Kurker and Leslie Linnemeyer of Boston University and Debbie Boetke and Lori Swanson of Drexel University on the America East All-Championship Softball Team.

Hofstra's Megan Almon wins it on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th

Winning pitcher Shannon Luther of Hofstra received the 2001 Outstanding Player honors. Luther went 3-0 pitching 31.1 innings, allowing 22 hits, five runs, four earned runs, three walks, and nine strikeouts with a 0.89 ERA in the three tournament appearances.
