Delaware 3, Hartford 2 (11 innings) Hartford 8, Delaware 4 Hens Split with Hartford in America East Opener Mandy Welch scored four runs in game two NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware won the first game 3-2 on a passed ball in the bottom of the 11th inning and Hartford used a five-run sixth inning in the second game for an 8-4 win as the teams split a doubleheader in their America East softball opener Saturday afternoon at Delaware Field. Delaware moved to 7-5, 1-1 on the season while Hartford moved to 3-3, 1-1. The teams will play another doubleheader Sunday at 12 noon at Delaware Field. In the opener, Delaware tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning when pinch-hitter Laura Streets singled home catcher Laurie Erickson who had tripled. Neither team scored again until the 11th inning when Hartford took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single by third baseman Marci Simoneau. But Delaware came back to win the game in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs with two outs to make a winner of starter Susan Dugan (5-1), who scattered 11 hits and struck out seven in 11 innings. Erickson and Carolyn Wasilewski both walked with two outs and Mandy Welch knocked in Erickson with a single to tie the game 2-2. Hartford catcher Bryn Weller then committed two passed balls, the second which scored Wasilewski with the game-winner. Weller and Jodiann Palmieri each collected three hits for the Hawks. Andi Miller (1-2) took the loss on the mound, allowing five hits and nine walks to go with seven strikeouts. In the second game, Hartford snapped a 3-3 tie with a five-run sixth inning to post the victory, its first over Delaware after losing seven of the previous eight meetings. After Hartford scored three runs in the first inning, Delaware chipped away at the lead and tied the score as Welch scored on an error in the first inning, Lauren Mark knocked in a run on a fielder's choice in the third inning, and pitcher Amanda Cariello had an RBI single in the fifth. But Hartford took over with the five-run sixth inning with the big blow a bases loaded three-run double by first baseman Abbey Toich, whose hard shot to shortstop hit off Wasilewski's glove and rolled to the leftfield fence.Toich collected four RBI for the game, including a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Palmieri added two RBI and Weller had two hits and an RBI to lead Hartford. Liz Nadeau picked up the win for Hartford to improve to 2-1. Mark had two RBI for Delaware in the nightcap while Welch and Wasilewski each collected two hits. Welch, who also stole a base, scored all four of Delaware's runs.
