Hofstra 7, Delaware 1 Dugan retires 17 of last 19 to win opener
NEWARK, DE -- Delaware's Susan Dugan fired a five-hitter in the opener and Hofstra's Shannon Luther tossed a one-hitter in the nightcap as the Pride and Blue Hens split an America East softball doubleheader for the second straight day. Delaware won the opener, 2-1, while Hofstra won the second game, 7-1. After spotting Hofstra a 1-0 lead on three straight hits in the top of the first inning, Dugan (11-6) settled down to retire 17 of the next 19 batters to finish the ball game and pick-up the win. She struck out one and did not issue a walk in the victory. Delaware tied the game in the bottom of the first on a bases loaded walk by Liz Winslow that signaled an early end to Kelly Blois' outing. Blois walked two and hit a batter in just 1/3 of an inning. Freshman walk-on Alexis Alcantara did a masterful job in relief, allowing just two hits and an unearned run, but was the tough luck loser. Delaware (18-19, 8-12 America East) took the lead in the fifth when Alcantara misplayed a pop-up off of the bat of Carolyn Wasilewski. One out later, Amanda Cariello ripped a triple to right center to score Wasilewski with the eventual game-winner. In the nightcap, Hofstra (23-19, 12-4) took command with a three run home run by Amanda Hallaway. The blast to left center in the third inning was Hallaway's seventh of the season and gave the Pride a 4-0 lead. That chased starting pitcher Cariello, who dropped to 4-8 with the loss. Delaware's lone hit off Luther (10-12) came in the fourth off the bat of Winslow. With one out, Winslow singled to center. Pinch-runner Beth Baugher eventually came around to score after moving to third on one of four Hofstra errors in the game and then coming home on a squeeze bunt by Melissa Basilio. Delaware will travel to Philadelphia Wednesday to take on Penn for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
