Dugan fires five-hit
shutout

NEWARK, DE -- Senior Susan Dugan fired a
five-hitter in the opener as Delaware split a doubleheader
with LaSalle in softball action Tuesday afternoon. Delaware
won the opener, 3-0, while LaSalle rallied to win the
nightcap, 5-4.
Dugan threw exactly 100 pitches in
raising her record to 8-4 on the season. She struck out
seven and walked two in the win.
Delaware (12-15) scored three times in
the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie and provide Dugan
with all of the offense she needed. Mandy Welch broke the
tie with her third hit of the game, an RBI single that
scored Melissa Basilio, who had doubled to open the inning.
Lauren Mark's sacrifice fly and Amanda Cariello's RBI single
added insurance for Dugan, who recorded her second shutout
of the season.
In the nightcap, LaSalle (6-23) exploded
for four runs in the sixth to rally. Losing pitcher Mark
(1-5) took a no-hitter and a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning,
but the Explorers received an RBI single from Jill Stombock
and a two-run single from Amanda Clark to take a 4-3 lead.
Lisa Ferraina followed with an RBI triple to score Clark and
chase Mark.
Delaware got to within one in the bottom
of the sixth when Dugan, who relieved Mark as the pitcher,
doubled down the right field line, moved to third on an
error by the shortstop and scored when a failed pickoff
throw at first when into right field. However, that would be
the end of the Delaware threat.
Welch, a junior from LaPlata, MD,
finished the twinbill 4-for-5 at the plate to raise her
average to .319 on the season.
The Blue Hens travel to Towson for a
four-game America East set this weekend. Friday's
doubleheader gets underway at 1 p.m.
