Delaware 2, Maine 1 (8) Maine 8, Delaware 0 (6) Blue Hens Split with Maine; Mark Wins Game 1 With RBI Double Lauren Mark won game one with an eighth inning double NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware senior Lauren Mark (Ursuline/Hockessin, DE) hit a run-scoring double to the left field fence in the eighth inning to lift the Blue Hens to a 2-1 win in the first game and earn UD a split with the University of Maine in an America East softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Delaware Field. In the second game, Maine's Carrie Green (Brandywine HS/Wilmington, DE) pitched a six-hitter and the Black Bears scored six runs in the fifth inning on the way to an 8-0 victory. Delaware, which won three of the four games during the weekend set, moved to 11-10, 4-4 America East while Maine moved to 6-23, 1-3. Senior Susan Dugan (Rising Sun/Newark, DE) earned the win in the opener as she allowed just five hits and struck out nine Maine batters to improve to 7-2. Maine opened the scoring in game one as the Black Bears executed a double steal in the second inning with Leigh Ann Hlywak (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE) stealing home. Delaware came back to tie the game with a run in the third when Mandy Welch opened the inning with a double and scored on an error. No one scored again until the eighth inning when shortstop Carolyn Wasilewski opened with a single, her second hit of the game, and scored on Mark's double to the wall. In the second game, Maine got an outstanding effort from Green (2-6), who scattered six hits and struck out two. Maine scored one run in the fourth and six in the fifth inning to put the game away. The Black Bears took advantage of two Delaware errors in the fifth inning for their six runs. First baseman Katie Churchill was 3 for 4 with an RBI while shortstop Erica Sobel was 2 for 4 with two RBI and a stolen base. Mark, who started the second game at pitcher and suffered the loss (1-4), and third baseman Melissa Basilio each had two hits for the Blue Hens, who stranded nine runners for the game. Delaware will continue play next Saturday and Sunday with four games at America East foe Boston University.
