NEWARK, DE -- Amanda Cariello was
3-for-4 in the opener and Mandy Welch was 3-for-3 in the
nightcap to pace the Delaware attack as it swept a softball
doubleheader against Rider, 2-1 and 3-2, at Delaware Field
Wednesday afternoon.
Cariello had two singles and a double and
scored the eventual game-winner in the opener. That was all
winning pitcher Susan Dugan would need in notching her 10th
win of the year. She struck out seven and walked four while
scattering three hits.
In the nightcap, Mandy Welch was 3-for-3
and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
Welch led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild
pitch. Carolyn Wasilewski then laid down a sacrifice bunt to
move Welch to third. However, the throw to first was wild
and Welch raised home with the go-ahead run.
Lauren Mark allowed just three hits in
raising her record to 3-5 on the season. One of those hits,
however, was a two-run home run off the bat of Rider's
Deanna Dovak. It was Dovak's 13th home run of the
season.
Delaware moved to 16-17 on the season and
has won three straight. Rider fell to 18-18 and has lost six
straight and eight of its last nine.
Delaware hosts conference frontrunner
Hofstra in a four-game America East set this weekend.
Saturday's doubleheader gets underway at 12 noon.
