TOWSON, MD -- Delaware freshman Laura Streets' two-ruin double in the top of the seventh broke a 6-6 tie and capped a rally as the Blue Hens split an America East softball doubleheader Friday afternoon. Delaware won the opener, 8-6, but lost the nightcap, 1-0. In the opener, the Blue Hens rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh. Streets' two-out, two-run double off of releiver Beth Miller broke a 6-6 tie after Lauren Mark's RBI single off starting pitcher Kathleen O'Hara had tied the game. Towson threatened in its half of the seventh. Winning pitcher Susan Dugan (9-5) struck out Ruth Wilson to open the inning, but issued consecutive walks to Lisa Pollock and Michelle Cappe. Dugan then got Brroke Clyde on a called third strike for the second out of the inning. However, a passed ball moved the runners into scoring position. Dugan, though, coaxed clean-up hitter Stacey Smith into grounding back to the mound to end the ballgame and snap a Towson seven-game winning streak. Delaware (13-16, 5-9 America East) had rallied earlier from a 3-1 first-inning deficit with four runs in the second inning. The big hit in the inning came from Carolyn Wasilewski's first career home run. The three-run blast over the left field fence gave Delaware a 5-3 lead. However, it was short-lived as Towson responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to retake the lead, 6-5, before Delaware's seventh inning rally. In the nightcap, Towson pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth to spoil a stellar pitching performance by Amanda Cariello. Cariello allowed just four hits and did not issue a walk in a losing effort. In the decisive inning, Pollock singled to open the bottom of the sixth and stole second. Cappe struck out, but the ball squirted away and Pollock moved to third while Cappe was retired at first base. Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score the game's only run. Julie Hughes, Beth Wilcox and Miller combined on a three-hit shutout for the Tigers (22-16-1, 7-6-1). Delaware and Towson will meet again Saturday at 12 noon in an America East doubleheader.
