Delaware 5, Towson 4
TOWSON, MD -- Two key squeeze bunts keyed a five-run sixth inning explosion and lifted Delaware to a 5-4 win in the nightcap and a split with Towson in a key America East softball doubleheader at Towson Center Field Saturday afternoon. The Tigers (23-17-1, 8-7-1 America East) won the opener, 5-0, behind a combined two-hit shutout by Julie Hughes and Beth Wilcox. Trailing the second game 3-0 after five innings, Delaware (14-17, 6-10 America East) came alive in the sixth. Kathleen O'Hara came on to relieve starter Beth Miller to open the inning. However, O'Hara would not record an out. Mandy Welch walked and stole second. Caroyln Wasilewski followed with a single to move Welch to third base. Lauren Mark then laid down a squeeze bunt that scored Welch and Mark beat out for a single. Amanda Cariello then followed with a double to left that scored Wasilewski and moved Mark to third. Miller then re-entered to relieve O'Hara and was welcomed with a squeeze bunt single by Liz Winslow to tie the game. Freshman Laura Streets, who drove in the winning run in Friday's win over Towson, followed with an RBI single to score Cariello and give Delaware a 4-3 lead. Two outs later, sophomore Brooke May recorded her first collegiate hit with an RBI single that scored Streets. Mark, who came on in relief of Cariello in the fifth, then held on for her second win of the season (2-6). Towson pulled to within one in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Brooke Clyde with one out. However, Mark struck out Sara Foster and got Chris Navarro to ground out to second to end the ball game. Delaware returns home to host Rider Wednesday at 3 p.m.
