Virginia Beach Tournament Day 2 UMBC 8, Delaware 0 Akron 4, Delaware 0 Delaware 8, Elon 3 Cornell 4, Delaware 0 March 3, 2001 Laurie Streets Hit Three Home Runs vs. Elon VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- The University of Delaware softball team won one game and dropped three others, including a 4-0 setback to Cornell in the consolation finals, Saturday at the season-opening Virginia Beach Tournament. The Blue Hens (3-4), who won two games Friday, opened the busy day with an 8-0 loss to UMBC, fell to Akron 4-0, defeated Elon 8-3, then closed the tournament with the 4-0 loss to Cornell in the consolation finals. The tournament finals will be played Sunday afternoon. Highlighting the day for Delaware was the record-setting play of freshman third baseman Laura Streets (Newark, DE HS) who went 3 for 4 with three home runs and seven runs batted in the 8-3 victory over Elon. The lefthanded hitting Streets tied the Delaware single game home run record set by Joan Schimpf vs. William Paterson in 1976 and had the second highest RBI total in school history behind only Chris Brady's nine RBI day vs. St. Joseph's in 1999. Streets also became the first player in UD history to hit home runs in three consecutive at bats, hitting a three-run shot in the third and two-run homers in the fifth and seventh innings. She later later went 2 for 3 in the loss to Cornell. Street's heroics vs. Elon backed the pitching of Susan Dugan who scattered nine hits to notch her second win of the season. In the first game of the day, UMBC scored five runs in the fourth inning to break open the first game and cruise to the 8-0 victory. UMBC's Kristin Dulay pitched a five-hitter to earn the win. Delaware's Carolyn Wasilewski (Minersville/Pottsville, PA) and Mandy Welch (McDonough/LaPlata, MD) each collecting two hits. In the second game, Akron's Lisa Keenan hurled a six-hitter in the 4-0 victory, getting support from Kerstin Sewell who hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Welch and Wasilewski each had two hits again for the Blue Hens. In the loss to Cornell, Big Red starter Nicole Zitarelli hurled a four-hitter and Charlotte Brombach went 3 for 4 with a run scored and a double. Delaware returns to action March 13 with a doubleheader at George Mason.
