CAA Tournament - Day 1 Delaware 4, James Madison 3 Hofstra 5, Delaware 4 May 10, 2002     HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Top-seeded Hofstra University rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to thwart Delaware's hopes of an upset and come away with a 5-4 win in a winner's bracket game at the inaugural Colonial Athletic Association Softball Tournament. The fourth-seeded Blue Hens had advanced to face Hofstra after defeating James Madison in the first game, 4-3. Delaware (19-26) held a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Blue Hens could not hold on. The Pride (26-25) scored the final two runs on a pair of bases loaded walks. Delaware took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Hofstra responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run double by Amanda Hallaway. Delaware came back to take a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning. Liz Winslow doubled and pinch-runner Marianne Dietz scored on a single by Randi Isaacs. Jenny Gilkins followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Jenn Joseph sacrificed Gilkins to second. Amanda Cariello followed pinch-hit single to score Isaacs and Mandy Welch ripped a single to score Gilkins. Joseph, who dropped to 3-11 on the season with the loss, finished with a school-record 10 walks, including four in the bottom of the seventh. She now has 69 walks in 95 innings this season., tying Cariello for a share of the school-record for walks in a season. The Blue Hens rallied to win their first game of the day over No. 5 James Madison with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. James Madison had jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two more in the second. However, Delaware got one back in the fifth when Welch slapped an RBI single. The hit was Welch's 200th of her career making UD's all-time hit leader the first to achieve the milestone. She finished the day with four hits to raise her career total to 203. In the seventh, Cariello led off by reaching on an error. With one out, pinch runner Dietz stole second. Gilkins followed with an infield single, on which Dietz moved to third. With Joseph at the plate, Dietz scored and Gilkins moved to second on a passed ball to make it a 3-2 game. Joseph, after fouling off a series of pitches, worked a walk. Welch followed with a single to left to load the bases. Laurie Erickson lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Gilkins and tied the game. On the fly out, Joseph also moved to third base. One batter later, Streets smacked a single to right to score Joseph with the game-winner. Cariello (12-10) hurled her 16th complete game of the season to pick up the win. The senior from Bear, DE settled down after a bumpy start. She allowed just two hits after the first two innings and retired 15 out of 18 batters over the final five innings.
