Delaware 5, Delaware State 3 Delaware 7, Delaware State 2 April 3, 2002   Mandy Welch went 5-for-6, raising her career hit total to 174 -- good for No. 3 all-time at UD. NEWARK, DE -- Mandy Welch went 5-for-6 in the doubleheader as Delaware swept a softball twinbill from Delaware State, 5-3 and 7-2, Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Field. Welch moved into third place in career hits at Delaware. The senior from LaPlata, MD now has 174 career hits, eight shy of former teammate Lauren Mark's record of 182. Welch passed Christine Brady's total of 170 with her five hits on Wednesday. In the opener, senior Amanda Cariello (Bear, DE/St. Mark's) outpitched younger sister sophomore Christine Cariello for the win. In their first-ever meeting as opposing pitchers, it was the elder Cariello allowing just one earned run in a complete game win to move to 6-5 on the season. She also helped her cause with an RBI single in the fifth. In the nightcap, which was called after six innings due to darkness, Delaware used a four-run fifth to break open a 3-1 game. Liz Winslow and Welch delivered the big hits in the inning. With two outs, Winslow smacked a two-run pinch-hit single to make it a 5-1 game. Welch, who went 3-for-3 with a walk in the second game, followed with a two-run double through the left side of the infield that got into the gap and made it 7-1. Freshman Jenn Joseph (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) pitched the first 4-1/3 innings to earn her first collegiate win. Becky Rogers earned her first collegiate save. Rogers was brilliant in 1-2/3 innings of relief work, striking out Christine Cariello and Patty Brown to work out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the fifth. She allowed two hits and an unearned run, while striking out three. Delaware (9-12) opens Colonial Athletic Association action this weekend when it hosts James Madison for three games beginning Saturday.
